- Successful applicants must work full-time on site for 3 months or until they understand the department’s ICT landscape, requirements and project objectives. Flexible working arrangements may be considered afterward, subject to approval per the Department’s operational needs and ICT Contractor Working from Home Guidelines. Contractors must be on-site in Canberra at least 3 days per week. Remote work costs (eg travel, accommodation, utilities, equipment) are the contractor’s responsibility.
About the project Client, ABF, and the Sydney Airport Corporation Limited (SACL) will deliver Kiosks Infrastructure Uplift Project which is a joint program of work to modernise the ICT rooms and network infrastructure at Sydney Airport. This will provide a secure, highly resilient, fit for purpose capability to support border operations and to provide additional capacity for the expansion of border clearance kiosks.
About the team The Technology Operations & Support Branch (TOSB) is responsible for the Department’s on-premises ICT infrastructure, platforms, networks and data centres. The branch requires suitably qualified Infrastructure Solution Engineer with specialist capability to support complex infrastructure build, integration and assurance activities across classified and unclassified environments.

Infrastructure Engineers implement, manage and retire the infrastructure (including physical, virtual, networking and cloud infrastructure) that supports digital services.
The Senior Network Engineer design, build and maintain the systems and network infrastructure that are needed for daily business operations to build a secure, reliable, and scalable network, cloud, or server environments.
Key duties and responsibilities The Specified Personnel will be responsible for providing the following deliverables including but not limited to:
- Providing network support, including installing, configuring and troubleshooting network hardware and software;
- Troubleshooting networking issues and resolve it within a timeframe;
- Performing routine maintenance including updates, patches, and system upgrades;
- Improving network performance and processes;
- Collaborating and communicating closely with team members, end users, clients, vendors and stakeholders to deliver reliable network services and support continuous improvement;
- Providing technical expertise and guidance to projects and business stakeholders;
- Maintaining, monitoring and upgrading the Virtual Service Setting (VSE) environments and servers;
- Planning, designing, developing, testing and maintaining new or existing virtual service developments in accordance with guidelines and in collaboration with stakeholders;
- Configuring and deploying virtual services and servers in accordance with the applications operational model governed by application owners;
- Defining and leading the analysis, planning, execution, delivery and performance improvement activities;
- Promoting the adoption of virtual services to ICT stakeholders and project teams through workshops;
- Undertaking a range of activities in support of the management and operation of the Department's secure Internet gateway, secure systems, data centre and network services;
- Implementing and managing major/minor project work to support Departmental initiatives;
- Undertaking enhancement and remediation activities across network and gateway systems;
- Managing multiple tasks with competing priorities and deadlines;
- Liaising with external and internal service providers as required;
- Providing support with infrastructure capacity and planning including mainframe.
Specified Personnel will be expected to transfer skills and knowledge to departmental staff and ensure appropriate documentation is stored in accordance with the Department’s recordkeeping policy and practices. The Specified Personnel will also be responsible for producing the following deliverables, including but not limited to:
- Business Specifications;
- Functional Specifications;
- As Built Documentation;
- Standard Operating Procedures;
- Detailed data centre networking reporting design;
- Deployment Guides;
- Technical Specifications.
All deliverables performed by the specified personnel must:
1.
be performed or delivered promptly and without delay in accordance with the timeframes notified by the buyer from time to time; and
2. meet the assessment and performance criteria set out in any monitoring and performance assessment processes notified to the seller from time to time.
Technical skills Experience in any of the following technologies would be advantageous:
· Cisco networking infrastructure
· Industrial switching
· SSL Gateways
· Load Balancing technologies
· Proxy Systems
· Firewalls (including Firewall management technologies)
· IPS
· Infrastructure Capacity and Planning
· Data Centre Support Services
Essential criteria
- Availability management level 5: Provides advice and guidance on the planning, design and improvement of service and component availability. Investigates all breaches of availability targets and service non-availability and initiates remedial activities.
- Capacity management level 4: Monitors service component capacity and initiates actions to resolve any shortfalls according to agreed procedures.
- IT infrastructure level 4: Provides technical expertise to enable the correct application of operational procedures.
- Problem management level 4: Initiates and monitors actions to investigate and resolve problems in systems, processes and services. Determines problem fixes and remedies.
- Programming/software development level 3: Designs, codes, verifies, tests, documents, amends and refactors moderately complex programs/scripts. Applies agreed standards and tools to achieve a well-engineered result.
- Systems design level 5: Designs large or complex systems and undertakes impact analysis on major design options and trade-offs. Ensures that the system design balances functional and non-functional requirements.
Desirable criteria
- Territory qualifications or certificate i.e. CCNA CCNP CCIE.
- Knowledge and experience with WAPs, DNS, DHCP, Wi-Fi, BGP, EIGRP and SDA,
- Proven experience working with Cisco, Palo Alto and Azure technologies.
- Understanding of gateway and ICT security technologies and electrical safe handling/awareness.
