The Rehabilitation Society of Australia and New Zealand (RMSANZ)

New South Wales

Job Description

$150,000 – $170,000 per year (pro rata, 0.5FTE)

n

RMSANZ is the peak body representing rehabilitation medicine physicians across Australia and New Zealand. We're looking for an experienced General Manager to be our senior executive — driving advocacy, government relations and strategic delivery in close partnership with our President and Board.

n

This is a part-time, high-impact leadership role suited to someone who wants genuine influence and autonomy without the demands of a full-time executive position.

n

About the role

n

As General Manager, you'll be RMSANZ's principal driver of advocacy, government and stakeholder relations, and public profile — responsible for the effective, sustainable running of the Society over the long term. You'll lead delivery of the current Strategic Plan (2025–2030) and work closely with the Association Manager, who handles day-to-day membership, administration and governance support. You'll report to the RMSANZ President on behalf of the Board, and work alongside the Treasurer, Special Interest Groups, State Branches, and external partners including AROC, AFRM and ISPRM.

n

Key responsibilities

n

n
- Set direction and priorities with the President and Board, and lead the translation of strategy into action
n
- Build relationships with government departments and agencies, grow RMSANZ's representation on influential committees, and manage external government relations and media support
n
- Oversee media strategy, website, social media and campaigns to raise the profile of rehabilitation medicine
n

- Support the Annual Scientific Meeting and help grow its international reputation
n
- Act as Company Secretary, oversee AGM and Board meeting processes, and support the Society's financial sustainability and governance obligations
n

n

About you

n

n
- Senior leadership or general management experience, ideally within a member-based, medical, health or not-for-profit organisation
n
- A track record in advocacy, government relations, public affairs or stakeholder engagement
n
- Experience managing external consultancies or agencies (e.g. lobbying, media/PR)
n
- An understanding of corporate governance obligations for an incorporated not-for-profit (or willingness to get up to speed quickly) — Company Secretary experience is a plus
n
- Comfortable working with, and reporting to, a volunteer Board and President
n
- A strategic thinker who can turn high-level goals into practical, resourced action plans
n
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence engaging government officials and media
n
- Well organised, collaborative, and skilled at managing competing priorities
n

n

What's on offer

n

A part-time (0.5 FTE) leadership role with real strategic influence, with versatile work hours and ability to negotiate conditions.

n

The chance to shape advocacy and policy outcomes for a respected medical specialty.

n

A collaborative working relationship with a supportive President, Board and Association Manager.

n

Flexibility in how and where you work.

n

RMSANZ is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive Board and leadership team.
