Our Private Clients and Family Office practice For more than 70 years, ABL has advised some of Australia’s most influential individuals and families.

Today our market leading national practice works with high-net-worth individuals, families and family offices across the full range of their personal, commercial and philanthropic interests.

We advise on wealth and trust structuring, asset protection, family governance and agreements, intergenerational wealth transfer, succession and estate planning and philanthropy. We also advise on the establishment and operation of family offices and on the acquisitions, disposals, investments and restructures undertaken by families and family offices.

Our work sits at the intersection of law, business, family and capital. There is often much more at stake than the immediate legal issue, and our clients look to us as trusted advisers who understand their broader objectives and can bring together the right expertise across the firm.

We are expanding our team in Melbourne and Sydney and are looking for talented people who want to help shape the next stage of one of Australia’s leading private clients and family office practices.

The opportunities

We have multiple opportunities across a range of levels, from Lawyer through to Senior Associate and Special Counsel, in Sydney or in Melbourne.

You will work directly with high-net-worth individuals, families and family offices on complex and sensitive matters concerning their personal, financial, philanthropic and business interests. Depending on your background, your work may include:

- family office structuring and governance;
- the acquisition, sale and restructuring of family and privately owned businesses;
- private capital investments and other M&A; transactions;
- trusts, asset protection and wealth structuring;
- family agreements and succession planning;
- estate planning and intergenerational wealth transfer;
- philanthropic structures, foundations and social investment; and
- coordinating legal, tax and commercial advice across a family’s broader affairs.

You will have the opportunity to take ownership of matters, work closely with senior practitioners and specialists across the firm and build direct, long-term relationships with clients and their advisers. You will also contribute to the continuing development and growth of the practice.

About You

We are interested in hearing from candidates with a range of qualified backgrounds.



You may already practise in private clients or family office advisory, or you may bring complementary experience that would translate well into this work.

Experience in corporate transactions or M&A; or philanthropy would be particularly valuable. We would also welcome applications from lawyers with a tax background, as our team works closely with our tax team.

You will have

- 5 + years’ post-admission experience in private practice;
- strong experience advising high-net-worth individuals, family owned businesses and/or family offices;
- strong technical skills, commercial judgement and attention to detail;
- the ability to manage matters independently, with appropriate supervision;
- superior analytical, communication and drafting skills; and
- the discretion, sensitivity and interpersonal skills required to advise on complex and confidential matters.
