SkyDB is seeking an experienced Senior Backend & AI Software Engineer for an exciting long-term opportunity supporting an Australian Government agency. You’ll join a multidisciplinary AI-focused engineering team , working alongside software developers, data scientists, machine learning engineers, business analysts and subject matter experts to build innovative, production-ready software solutions.

This is a particularly strong opportunity for a Python/AWS backend engineer who has experience with serverless architecture, DevOps practices and an interest in AI, Machine Learning and MLOps .

What You’ll Be Doing

- Design, build and maintain production software using Python and AWS
- Develop serverless applications and cloud-native backend services
- Build and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code, preferably using AWS CDK
- Develop and manage CI/CD pipelines , including AWS CodePipeline
- Work closely with Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers
- Develop Proofs of Concept using emerging technologies
- Help transition creative concepts into reliable production capabilities
- Maintain and continuously improve existing production systems
- Contribute to code quality, engineering practices and technical documentation
- Support the responsible application of AI and emerging technologies
- Collaborate across multidisciplinary Agile delivery teams

Core Technical Experience We’re looking for strong commercial experience across:

Essential





- Python
- Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- AWS serverless application development
- Infrastructure-as-Code, ideally AWS CDK
- DevOps and CI/CD
- AWS CodePipeline or similar CI/CD tooling
- Agile software development
- Production software engineering

Highly Desirable

- JavaScript and/or TypeScript
- Vue.js
- Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
- MLOps
- Experience integrating AI/ML capabilities into production applications

What We’re Looking For You’ll ideally be a senior software engineer who can work autonomously while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary environment.

Government experience is particularly valuable, with the evaluation placing emphasis on:

- AWS experience
- Python software development
- DevOps tools and practices
- Government multidisciplinary software delivery experience

Working Arrangements The team is based in Canberra , and office-based work with flexible arrangements is preferred. However, candidates based in ACT, NSW, VIC or QLD may be considered for remote working within the same time zone.

Remote candidates should be prepared to:

- Attend Canberra for approximately 2–3 days during onboarding
- Travel to Canberra for occasional short visits, typically around twice per year and no more than four times annually
- Cover their own travel expenses

Security Requirement Candidates must be capable of obtaining an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance .
