The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service (TALS) is seeking a passionate and dedicated person to provide culturally appropriate support and connection to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are on remand or serving sentences of imprisonment.

The Role

The Aboriginal Wellbeing Officer provides culturally safe wellbeing and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in custody across Tasmania. The role connects people with family, community, culture and services, and works with stakeholders and service providers to facilitate referrals, support rehabilitation and promote wellbeing, healing and successful reintegration.

This is an identified position, open only to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander persons. TALS considers Aboriginality to be a genuine occupational requirement and adopts the Commonwealth definition of Aboriginality.

Key Selection Criteria

1. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with Aboriginal community organisations, stakeholders and service providers.

2. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture, and the systemic issues affecting Tasmanian Aboriginal communities.

3. Demonstrated understanding of the complex needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in custody, including the impacts of institutionalisation and intergenerational trauma, and the application of trauma-informed and culturally safe practices to support positive outcomes and reduce recidivism.

4. Ability to liaise, negotiate and exercise effective conflict resolution skills.

5. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, with a high level of self-direction.

6. Strong written communication and administrative skills,



including the ability to maintain accurate and confidential case notes, complete standard forms, and use contemporary IT systems and client databases.

7. Experience and skills in social work, community services, justice or related disciplines will be well regarded.

Other Requirements

· Ability to obtain and maintain a Tasmanian Prison Service (TPS) security clearance.

· A National Police Check to the satisfaction of the employer.

· Current registration to work with vulnerable people in Tasmania.

· A current driver’s licence.

· Compliance with the Department of Justice’s WHS standards and directions.

Travel across Tasmania to deliver services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities may be required. At times, this travel may occur outside usual business hours.
