As a member of Airservices Australia's Field Maintenance team, you will maintain and support critical Communication, Navigation, Surveillance, Infrastructure (CNSI) and Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems that underpin Australia's aviation network. This role combines hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities, offering the opportunity to guide and develop technical teams while contributing to the safety and reliability of essential aviation services.

The Role & The Team
As a Technical Specialist (Band 5), you will play a critical role in maintaining the systems that support Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) operations across Northern Queensland.
Based in Cairns, you will be responsible for the monitoring, maintenance, installation and optimisation of complex Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and Infrastructure (CNSI) and Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems.
You will also provide technical leadership to field maintenance teams, supporting capability development, mentoring team members,
and assisting the Field Maintenance Manager in the delivery of high-quality technical services and operational outcomes.

What You'll Do
- Maintain complex CNSI and ATM systems and assets in accordance with operational, regulatory and safety requirements.
- Deliver installation, fault rectification, preventative maintenance and technical support activities.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, coaching and guidance to field maintenance team members.
- Support the development and assessment of technical competencies and training programs, including on-the-job training.
- Assist with work planning, scheduling and resource allocation to ensure efficient service delivery.
- Coordinate with engineering specialists, service providers and contractors to resolve technical issues and improve system performance.
- Ensure compliance with Airservices governance, safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in hazard identification, risk assessments and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to operational support activities that maintain the reliability and availability of aviation infrastructure.
- Provide technical advice and recommendations to support future technology improvements and business objectives.

The Person
The successful applicant will have:
- Demonstrated experience maintaining and supporting complex communications, navigation, surveillance, infrastructure and/or technology systems.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving capability within critical operational environments.
- Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to technical teams.
- Well-developed stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Ability to contribute to strategic improvements and operational efficiencies.
- Strong commitment to safety, compliance and continuous improvement.
- Experience coordinating activities across multiple stakeholders, contractors and service providers.
- The ability to work independently while supporting broader team objectives.
Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant trade qualification and industry licences where applicable.
- Current State Electrical Licence (where required).
- Australian Driver's Licence.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC).
- Australian Citizenship.
- Demonstrated experience working on CNSI, ATM or comparable mission-critical systems.
- Experience leading technical work programs or specialist maintenance teams.
- Construction Industry White Card
Desirable
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
- Electrical Engineering qualification or related discipline.
- Current CPR/LVR certification
- Experience within aviation, telecommunications, defence, infrastructure or other highly regulated operational environments.
Security Clearance

This role performs Safety Sensitive Aviation Activities and as such is subjected to our Drug and Alcohol Management Procedure (DAMP).
