About us

Women’s Legal Service Tasmania (WLST) is a not-for-profit community service within the legal assistance sector. We are a feminist service with an objective to empower women (including all those who identify as women and non-binary and choose to engage our service) and deliver services with a trauma informed approach. We are mainly funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments and have operated in Lutruwita/Tasmania for nearly 30 years. A statewide service, we have offices in Burnie, Launceston and Nipaluna/Hobart. WLST has a dedicated staff of over thirty across the state including lawyers, social workers and financial counsellors, and a committed group of volunteer members of the Board of Management.

Further information is available on our website at womenslegaltas.org.au.

Call for Board Members

We are looking to recruit board members who are residents of Lutruwita/Tasmania. We particularly encourage applicants who live in rural, regional and remote parts of the state.

WLST values diversity and inclusion and welcome all women and non-binary people to apply.

WLST aims to create a culturally secure and respectful environment for all board members, particularly valuing the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and individuals with lived experience of marginalisation.

All suitable candidates will be considered, but desirable attributes may include an interest or experience in:

● Human resources
● Workplace health and safety

● Governance and risk management

WLST is committed to making board participation accessible and offers accommodations to support individuals with disabilities or other requirements. Attendance may be online, and alternative arrangements can be discussed to accommodate varying schedules, caregiving responsibilities, or accessibility needs.
Currently, our board meetings are held during a weekday evening, with flexibility to ensure inclusive participation.

Commitment and Expectations

This is a voluntary position.

Board members are expected to attend bi-monthly board meetings, review materials in advance of meetings and actively participate in the governance of the organisation. There will also be opportunity to participate in board subcommittees.

Board members represent WLST in the community in a manner that upholds our values of inclusivity, respect, and cultural safety.

Board members are expected to advocate for WLST’s mission, programs, and services as appropriate.

Board terms last for three years, and board members can sit for up to two consecutive terms.
