Civil Engineer - Build the Civil Practice You’d Actually Want to Work In!
You probably already have a job.
You’re probably reasonably comfortable.
And you’re probably not scrolling SEEK because you desperately need to leave tomorrow.
But maybe you’ve started wondering whether engineering could be better than this.
Less bureaucracy.
Less pressure to hit utilisation targets.
Less being treated like a number.
More autonomy.
More influence.
More trust.
More time for your life outside work.
That’s what we’re offering.
This isn’t just another engineering position
RES Engineering Co is an established, 100% Tasmanian-owned engineering consultancy with offices in Launceston, Hobart and Devonport.
We’ve built a strong structural engineering business and a solid client base across Tasmania.
Now we want to take the next step.
We’re looking for an experienced Civil Engineer to help us build and grow the civil side of RES.
Not simply process jobs.
Not just fill a seat.
Build it with us.
You’ll have the opportunity to influence the type of work we take on, how we deliver it, the systems we use, how the civil team grows and ultimately what civil engineering at RES becomes.
You’ll have the freedom and influence of helping build your own engineering practice — without having to take the financial risk of starting one yourself.
Why you might leave a good job for RES
Because work should fit into your life — not become your life.
At RES, we want experienced people who are good at what they do, and then we trust them to do it.
That means:
- Genuine work/life balance
- A realistic workload
- Flexibility around how your working week is structured
- Negotiable hours - Full Time/ Part-Time/ RDO
- Autonomy over your projects
- Direct access to the Director — no layers of management
- The ability to influence decisions rather than simply follow them
- A small team where your contribution genuinely matters
- The opportunity to help build and eventually lead our civil capability
- Interesting Tasmanian projects that you can actually see being built
- Support from an established structural engineering and drafting team
- No corporate politics
- No expectation that your evenings and weekends belong to us
We’re ambitious about the business.
But we don’t believe growing a successful engineering consultancy requires burning out the people who work in it.
What we’re looking for
We’re not looking for a graduate or someone who needs to be heavily supervised.
We’re looking for an experienced engineer who knows their craft.
Someone comfortable making decisions, dealing with clients, solving problems and taking ownership of their work.
Your background will ideally include strong experience in:
- Civil engineering design
- Stormwater and drainage
- Earthworks and site development
- Site servicing
- Subdivision and development work
- Council and authority approvals
- Residential and light commercial development
Structural engineering experience would be highly regarded and would make you an especially robust fit for the role.
You’ll also need to currently hold the appropriate Tasmanian Registration.
What the role could become
This is where the opportunity gets interesting.
We’re not recruiting someone simply to help clear an existing workload.
We want someone who can help us create something bigger.
For the right engineer, this role has genuine scope to grow into responsibility for our civil engineering capability — building client relationships, developing systems, helping recruit future staff and becoming a key part of the leadership of RES.
How far that goes will depend on you.
If you want to remain a technically focused engineer with excellent balance and autonomy, that can work.
If you want to help build a team and take ownership of a growing part of the business, the opportunity is here.
Who RES suits
RES will probably suit you if you’re good at what you do but you’re tired of:
- Being measured by a utilisation percentage
- Layers of management and internal politics
- Having every decision made somewhere above you
- Constant unrealistic deadlines
- Working late because poor resourcing has become normal
- Feeling like your employer talks about work/life balance but doesn’t actually practise it
- Doing great work without having any real influence over the business
We’re not perfect.
We’re still growing, improving and figuring some things out as we go.
But that’s also the opportunity.
You can actually have a say in what this business becomes.
