About the team

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is Australia’s national authority on measurement. We maintain and regulate Australia’s measurement system, develop national measurement standards, and deliver measurement products and client services.

The Legal Metrology Branch helps ensure consumers and industry can rely on trusted measurements for fair trade. Trade Measurement Services delivers risk-based national compliance activities. Inspectors test measuring instruments, pre-packaged products and trading practices, and support other government agencies through memoranda of understanding.

This position supports Region 1, which includes the Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. The role works closely with Assistant Managers, inspectors, technical specialists and program teams across Australia.

The opportunity

As a Technical Senior Inspector, you will provide specialist technical leadership across Trade Measurement Services. Working with reasonable autonomy, you will guide complex regulatory work, exercise sound judgement within legislative and policy frameworks, maintain technical capability, support national program delivery and coach inspectors across a geographically dispersed region.

What you will do

Region 1 is a geographically dispersed operational team. The Technical Senior Inspector works across state and territory boundaries and balances planned program work with emerging technical and regulatory priorities. Day-to-day work involves independent judgement, virtual collaboration and regular engagement with inspectors, managers, program teams and technical specialists.

The role combines office-based technical work with field inspections, travel, training and stakeholder engagement. Priorities may change in response to compliance risks, operational incidents or national program requirements. You will be expected to communicate early, manage risks and support consistent outcomes across the region.
You will also be required to:

- Provide authoritative technical advice and make sound decisions within relevant legislation, policy, procedures and regulatory frameworks.
- Lead or support complex, sensitive or high-risk inspections, investigations and enforcement activities, identifying risks and recommending proportionate action.
- Analyse emerging issues, inspection outcomes and operational information to recommend improvements to compliance approaches, technical policy and business processes.
- Coach, mentor and provide constructive feedback to inspectors, building technical capability, accountability and consistently high-quality work.
- Coordinate and deliver technical training, competency assessment and presentations in partnership with Assistant Managers and subject-matter experts.
- Maintain technical expertise through field inspections and testing, including complex instruments.




- Build productive relationships and communicate with influence across internal teams, regulated entities, industry stakeholders and other government agencies.
- Lead or contribute to national compliance programs, projects, work health and safety requirements, quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a current Australian driver’s licence and demonstrate attainment of:

- Certificate IV in Government Investigations, or equivalent.
- Certificate IV in Trade Measurement, or a higher relevant qualification.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, or the ability to obtain it within 18 months of commencing.
- Appointment as an Inspector under section 18MA of the National Measurement Act 1960.

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes

Desirable qualifications and experience include First Aid and CPR certification, a forklift or truck licence, and experience in quality auditing.

The successful applicant will undertake regular interstate and intrastate travel, including overnight absences of up to one week. Travel may total approximately 12 weeks or 48 nights each year. Occasional out-of-hours work may also be required.

The role involves work at varied business premises and may include physical activities such as lifting, bending, pulling, pushing and reaching. Vaccinations, periodic health monitoring and other controls may be required in accordance with risk assessments, policy and health advice.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.

The position is based in Adelaide, Hobart, Perth or Melbourne. Adaptable work arrangements may be available, subject to operational requirements and agreement with the business area. The role is not fully remote because regular field work, travel and face-to-face activities are required.
