Senior Firmware Engineer
Byron Bay - Hybrid
140-150K+Super
Develop embedded firmware for cutting-edge electric hydrofoil technology, working across firmware, electronics and connected systems to help deliver innovative products from the engineering lab to the water.
The Opportunity
We are working exclusively with a company who specialise in hydrofoil technology. An exciting opportunity has become available for a Senior Firmware Engineer to take technical ownership of embedded firmware across a portfolio of innovative, connected hardware products. You’ll be working at the intersection of software, electronics and real-world product development, developing firmware that directly influences how high-performance hydrofoil products operate, perform and feel on the water. This is a senior engineering role where you’ll have the opportunity to solve complex technical problems, influence future product development and work closely with a highly multidisciplinary engineering team.
The Role
You’ll take ownership of firmware development across embedded devices and systems. The role will span the full product development lifecycle - from detailed software design and implementation through to testing, troubleshooting and real-world validation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take technical ownership of embedded firmware development across existing and future hydrofoil products.
- Design, develop, test, verify and maintain embedded firmware in C/C++.
- Develop firmware across flight controllers, receivers, Bluetooth devices, battery systems and other connected embedded systems.
- Diagnose and resolve complex firmware, hardware, RF, wireless communication and system-level issues.
- Work closely with electronics and hardware engineers to deliver robust software/hardware integration.
- Contribute to features across firmware and associated app, production and test tools.
- Develop robust unit testing and design‑for‑test approaches to improve firmware quality and reliability.
- Manage configuration, compatibility and software versioning, including forward and backward compatibility.
- Participate in on‑water and off‑water testing, using real‑world product behaviour to refine performance and reliability.
- Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions and GitLab development workflows.
- Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers across the firmware development process.
- Help establish and maintain software development standards, methodologies and engineering best practices.
- Investigate and resolve issues across firmware, hardware, wireless communications and connected systems.
- Work collaboratively across Firmware, Electronics, App, Cloud, Product Development and Engineering teams.
- Identify opportunities to improve platform stability, maintainability, performance and the overall customer experience.
- Contribute to the technical evolution of the product and help strengthen firmware capability across the engineering function.
About You
We’re looking for a senior firmware engineer who enjoys working on real, physical products and getting into the detail of how software, electronics and hardware come together.
You’ll ideally have:
- 5–10+ years’ experience in firmware, embedded software or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong hands‑on experience developing embedded software in C/C++.
- Experience developing firmware for physical,
hardware‑based products.
- Strong understanding of embedded systems and software/hardware interaction.
- Experience with RF, Bluetooth, wireless communications and associated protocols.
- Experience with unit testing, verification and design‑for‑test.
- Understanding of configuration management and forward/backward compatibility.
- Experience working with Git/GitLab and structured software development workflows.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, particularly when troubleshooting complex system‑level issues.
- A collaborative approach and the ability to provide technical guidance to other engineers.
- A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
Desirable Experience:
Experience with any of the following will be highly regarded:
- NRF528xx, Atmel ARM or STM32
- Flutter/Dart, Python or C#
- MIPI DSI
- Altium or LTSpice
- Digital, analogue, power, RF or battery management systems
- Li‑ion battery systems
- Connected devices / IoT
- Marine or watercraft products
- Full product development lifecycle experience
What’s on Offer
- Permanent opportunity based in Byron Bay.
- Hybrid arrangements.
- Senior technical ownership across innovative hydrofoil technology.
- Direct influence over future product development and technical direction.
- Hands‑on involvement from development through to real‑world testing on the water.
- A highly cooperative, multidisciplinary engineering environment.
- The opportunity to solve interesting engineering problems where your work has a direct impact on the end‑user experience.
If you’re an experienced embedded engineer looking to work on something genuinely different from the usual product environment, this is an opportunity worth exploring.
