Escape the ordinary. Help us run something extraordinary.
Some of the best places to work are the ones you have to travel to reach.
Risby Cove Boutique Hotel sits on the water at Strahan, where Macquarie Harbour opens into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. It is one of the most extraordinary corners of the country — and the gateway to it.
Twelve individually designed suites. A waterfront restaurant. Private dining and distinctive guest experiences. And a small team that has just brought the property through a transformative renovation, with a guest response that tells us we’re building something special. Now, we’re looking for someone to help us go further.
To be among the best luxury hotels in Tasmania takes more than a beautiful building. It takes people who care about the detail, who make guests feel genuinely welcome and who take pride in the standard they set. If that sounds like you, we’d love to talk.
The role
We’re advertising this position at two levels and will appoint at the level that best fits the person we find.
Hotel Manager — you’ll lead the guest experience and day-to-day hotel operation, working closely with the General Manager and alongside our Food and Beverage Manager and Head Chef.
Assistant General Manager — you’ll undertake the same core responsibilities, with the additional authority, leadership responsibilities and expectations that come with being second-in-charge of the property.
Either way, this is a hands-on role. You’ll be on the floor, at reception, in the suites and out with guests — not sitting behind a desk.
And this isn't simply about managing twelve rooms. Risby Cove operates as a boutique luxury destination encompassing accommodation, dining, personalised concierge service and a growing collection of distinctive Tasmanian experiences.
Creating exceptional guest stays
You’ll personally help guests shape their time on Tasmania’s West Coast. This is one of the most important parts of the role. Guests travel a long way to reach us, often for a once-in-a-lifetime visit, and what they experience while they are here can define their impression of the region.
You’ll prepare personalised pre-arrival itineraries for every guest, make recommendations and coordinate Risby Cove exclusive experiences collection from beginning to end — from private dining and Tasmanian wine, whisky and gin experiences to scenic flights, wilderness adventures, e-bikes and other ways of discovering the West Coast. You’ll book them, brief the team delivering them and make sure every detail comes together seamlessly.
Running the hotel
You’ll manage the day-to-day reception operation for our twelve suites, oversee housekeeping and coordinate maintenance across the property so that standards remain consistently high. You’ll know what is happening across the hotel, anticipate issues before they become problems and be comfortable making decisions when they need to be made.
You’ll work closely with the General Manager and take responsibility for special tasks and projects as required. You’ll also help bring the property to life online by drafting and scheduling regular social media content, working within Risby Cove’s established brand and marketing direction. You’ll represent the business and take charge when the General Manager is absent — dealing confidently with guests, staff, suppliers and the unexpected things that inevitably arise when running a hotel.
You’ll work closely alongside the Food and Beverage Manager and Head Chef. Together, these leadership roles cover the day-to-day operation of the property, so communication, mutual respect and a willingness to step across traditional departmental boundaries are essential.
If appointed as Assistant General Manager, you will also have overall operational authority in the General Manager’s absence.
Who you are
You’re warm, friendly and genuinely enjoy people. You’ll be talking with guests who travel here from all over the world, and you’ll be curious enough about this place to know what they should see, where they should go and what might make their stay memorable. At the same time, you’re organised, efficient and calm under pressure.
You present beautifully and carry yourself with quiet confidence. You take pride in your work, lead by example and naturally notice the details that need attention. Maintaining exceptionally high standards is simply part of how you work.
You have previous experience in hotel operations, reception or guest services, ideally within a five-star luxury hotel or lodge. You know what exceptional service looks like, enjoy developing teams and understand that the smallest details often leave the biggest impression. You’re comfortable using property management systems, restaurant reservation systems, point-of-sale systems and Microsoft 365.
You can set clear expectations,
hold people accountable and address issues when standards are not being met.
Most importantly, you’re prepared to roll up your sleeves. That might mean helping your team through a busy restaurant service, assisting with housekeeping, a room turnover or turndown, solving a guest's problem or simply doing whatever needs to be done to make the property run efficiently and smoothly.
For appointment as Assistant General Manager, we’ll be looking for someone who has already held a Hotel Manager role (preferred), or a senior position in food and beverage, guest services or hotel operations — ideally within a remote luxury lodge or boutique hotel.
Why Risby Cove?
You’ll be part of a small, close-knit team where your work is noticed, and your contribution genuinely counts. You’ll also have real influence over the direction of the guest experience as Risby Cove continues to grow.
For the right person, this is a permanent, year-round role with genuine scope to help shape the future of one of Tasmania’s emerging luxury boutique properties. It’s a chance to step out of the everyday and into a place most people only ever visit.
Staff accommodation is available if required, just five minutes from the property, in one of Tasmania’s most beautiful and sought-after corners.

Please note that pre-employment checks will be undertaken for prospective employees. These will include a nationally coordinated criminal history check (to be provided before start), two referee checks and verification of employment and academic history where relevant.
