More about the 3D Modeller (3ds Max) - Infrastructure & Civil Engineering role at Urban CGI Remote, UK hours. UK based preferred. Full-time contract.
Most people who can drive 3ds Max learned it on games or on buildings. Games does not reward accuracy. Buildings are largely boxes. Neither one prepares you for a cutting, a kerb and channel transition, a superelevated curve, or a rail alignment running through a hillside.
If that sentence made sense to you, keep reading.
We make the digital products that get major infrastructure built safely. Tunnelling, heavy civil, transport, some of the largest programmes in the world. 4D construction sequences, digital rehearsals, interactive models, procedures people actually follow. Our models get used to make decisions worth hundreds of millions, so they have to be right, and they have to run in real time.
The job
Build the world. Terrain from survey and DEM, earthworks, roads with correct cross sections, kerbs, channels, drainage, rail, structures, temporary works, plant and site set-up. Model it from the actual engineering drawings and the actual geospatial data, not from a photograph and a guess.
Then make it run. Everything you build gets optimised and taken into a real-time engine, so topology, polycount, pivots, naming, scale and UVs all matter from the first click.
3ds Max is the tool. Not Blender, not Maya, not Revit. If you are deep in Max, we want to talk to you.
What you need
Three years or more in 3ds Max on paid professional work.
You can read a set of engineering or construction drawings and build what they actually say. Plans, sections, levels, chainages, setting out.
Real experience with terrain, highways, rail or civil infrastructure. Organic surfaces, cut and fill, alignments, complex ground.
You optimise for real time. You know why a model that looks fine in a render can be useless in an engine.
AutoCAD, or CAD generally. This is standard equipment in this industry and we expect it.
Accurate by instinct. You check the level, you check the scale, you check it against the drawing.
AI fluent, and this one is not optional. You already use it daily in your own pipeline.
You can work the UK day, wherever you sit.
Helps, not essential
Unreal Engine, Datasmith, LODs, collision, materials. Civil 3D, Revit or Navisworks. Point clouds and scan data. Houdini. A civil engineering, surveying or geospatial qualification. A degree, postgraduate especially.
How we engage people
Contract, full time hours. Contract is how we run everything here, and we are not going to dress it up as something else.
We would like the right person to be here for years, and that is the intention. What we will not do is promise permanence on day one when it depends on work that is not yet won.
You are getting the truth instead of a promise, which is worth more than the promise.
What we will teach you The 4D and construction sequencing side, our pipeline, and how we work with the engineers. We would rather hire accuracy and teach the rest than hire speed and try to teach care.
How this works
Apply here with a link to your work. If you get through, we will ask you for a short screen recording, a Loom or similar, walking us through one model you built from drawings, and talking us through how you built it and how you optimised it. We would rather hear you talk about your work than guess at it from a portfolio.
The setup
Small company, short lines, no committees to get past. You will be close to the senior work immediately, which is unusual and is the main reason to take the job.
Before we jump into the responsibilities of the role. No matter what you come in knowing, you’ll be learning new things all the time and the Urban CGI team will be there to support your growth.
? Please consider applying even if you don't meet 100% of what’s outlined ?
