About Square Pegs

Square Pegs Dyslexia Support and Advocacy Inc. is a Tasmanian charity at an exciting point in its development. What began as a parent-led effort to improve support for children who learn differently has grown into an organisation with a capable and committed team in place. The focus now is on delivering well, supporting the team, and building the partnerships and funding base needed to grow Square Pegs into a robust, sustainable organisation for the long term.

Role purpose The Chairperson helps the Board stay focused, make good decisions and keep Square Pegs moving in the right direction. A key part of the role will be overseeing delivery of the organisation’s current Tasmanian Government grant-funded work, while also helping build a sustainable future beyond the current funding period. This role will suit someone who can bring people together, listen well, guide discussion and represent Square Pegs with credibility and care.

Time commitment

This is a volunteer role, and the time commitment will vary during the year. It will include touching base with the team each week to provide any broad direction or support that is needed in line with agreed plans, preparing for and attending Board meetings (around 10 per year), being available for occasional planning or governance work, and supporting key events or initiatives where possible.

Remuneration

This is a volunteer position and is not remunerated. All reasonable expenses connected with the role will be covered, along with approved professional learning or conference attendance.



The Chairperson will also work alongside a great group of people who are committed to making a practical difference for children and families.

Who we’re looking for

Key responsibilities

1. Chair Board meetings in a respectful and organised way, making sure people are heard and decisions are clear.
2. Work with Board members to set priorities, track progress and stay focused on what will make the biggest difference for families and children.
3. Support good governance, including thoughtful decision-making, accountability, risk awareness and meeting the organisation’s obligations.
4. Provide broad direction and guidance to the Executive Officer and Education & Engagement Officers, to help them deliver on the Board’s agreed priorities and feel supported in their roles.
5. Represent Square Pegs positively with families, educators, community partners, Government, donors and other stakeholders.
6. Work with the Board and staff to strengthen long-term sustainability, including future funding, partnerships, systems and succession planning.
7. Promote a culture that is child-centred, evidence-informed and aligned with our values of respect, integrity, inclusion, courage and action.

What you will bring

1. We are looking for someone who is thoughtful, steady and collaborative,



and who is comfortable being a visible advocate for Square Pegs when needed. A calm, respectful and inclusive leadership style is essential.
2. A genuine commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people with dyslexia and related learning differences is central to the role.
3. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are important, including confidence to represent the organisation with care and credibility in public, media and stakeholder settings.
4. Experience or interest in education, disability, health, community services, advocacy, governance or not-for-profit leadership would be valued.
5. The ability to advocate respectfully and effectively at Government level for system change would be highly valuable.
6. Capacity to help drive financial sustainability, including through partnerships, funding opportunities and sound organisational planning, is important.
