Primary objective The Deputy Commissioner of Consumer Affairs is a statutory position appointed by the Minister under the Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading Act 1990 (NT) to assist the Commissioner exercise powers and perform regulatory functions. You will be responsible for the day to day operations of Consumer Affairs and all corporate and business management functions. You will also be appointed to act as the Commissioner in their absence or during a vacancy in the office.

Context statement

Northern Territory Consumer Affairs is an independent office within the Attorney-General’s Department and administers a regulatory framework that works to protect community interests through promotion and regulation of business conduct and informs consumers and traders about their rights and obligations through education and conciliation services.

Key duties and responsibilities

1.



Exercise the statutory powers of the Deputy Commissioner across a broad range of consumer protection legislation.
2. Provide leadership, management, advice and support for the day to day operations of Consumer Affairs to ensure quality

services to stakeholders within a regulatory setting.
1. Provide recommendations to the Commissioner for action in relation to emerging trends, potential breaches of

legislation or significant consumer protection matters of public or national interest.
1. Prepare strategic reports for Consumer Affairs in relation to budget, operational and governance matters.
2. Manage the financial, human resources and information technology functions for Consumer Affairs.
3. Represent the Northern Territory on various national networks, contributing to national law reform, and compliance and

educational activities relating to the Australian Consumer Law and other legislation administered.
- Engage directly with the media providing comment about issues of public interest.
- Undertake duties of the Commissioner in their absence or during a vacancy in the office.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Superior written and oral communication skills, including an ability to interact and prepare reports/briefs at an executive

and national level as well as effectively dealing with people from diverse cultures.
1. Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a team, including a sound understanding of how to provide effective

service delivery in a regulatory workplace.
- Highly developed ability to interpret and apply legislation within a regulatory framework.

1. High level analytical and problem solving capability to critically evaluate complex information and make sound decisions

or recommendations using strategic judgement.
1. Ability to perform high level strategic and business management functions of an organisation (governance, planning,

reporting, HR, IT and financial management).
1. Knowledge of effective media engagement and the capacity to respond responsibly and appropriately to matters of

public-interest.

Desirable

1. Tertiary qualifications in Law, Business or a related discipline.
