Estimator/ Purchasing Officer

About NuForm Steel
NuForm Steel is a Melbourne-based architectural steel fabrication company specialising in the fabrication and installation of high-quality steelwork across commercial, residential and architectural projects.
We work closely with architects, builders, engineers, designers and other trades to deliver projects from initial concept and pricing through to procurement, fabrication and installation.
We work on landmark architectural projects and deliver specialist metalwork packages for some of Melbourne's most iconic buildings, working alongside some of the city's most well-regarded architects and builders . This gives our team exposure to world class design, detailing and construction projects..
As our business continues to grow, we are looking for a Purchasing Officer / Estimator to join our office team and develop into a key member of the business.
About the Role
This is an opportunity for someone early in their career who is interested in construction, architecture, estimating and how buildings are actually delivered .
You will work closely with our estimating, project management, procurement and production teams, gaining an understanding of how a project moves from architectural and engineering drawings through to pricing, procurement, fabrication and installation.
The role will initially have a strong focus on purchasing, estimating and project support , while progressively developing your skills and level of responsibility.
There is also scope to develop your career in the direction that best suits your strengths and interests, whether that is estimating, procurement, drafting, project coordination or project management .
You don't need to have previous experience in steel or estimating. We'll teach you the technical side of the role and give you the opportunity to learn from an experienced team.
Key Responsibilities
Purchasing & Procurement
- Reading and interpreting technical drawings
- Completing material take-offs
- Requesting and comparing supplier quotes
- Preparing and issuing purchase orders
- Following up supplier orders and delivery dates
- Maintaining purchasing records and documentation
- Building, maintaining and expanding relationships with suppliers
- Assisting with scheduling and project procurement
Estimating
- Reviewing drawings: architectural, structural, landscape, services and shop drawings
- Reviewing specifications,
schedules and technical references
- Assisting with take-offs and material quantities
- Requesting subcontractor and supplier pricing
- Preparing material and labour cost estimates
- Entering and maintaining pricing information
- Assisting with tender submissions
- Learning to identify project requirements, exclusions and potential risks
General Project Support
- Assisting project managers, procurement team, and operations with day-to-day administration & tasks
- Maintaining project documentation, records and updating status registers & spreadsheets
- Following up outstanding information from suppliers, clients and subcontractors
- Assisting with variations and additional works
- Answering phones
- General office and project administration as required
About You We're looking for someone who is:

Most importantly, we're looking for a good person who will fit into the team and has the right attitude . You don't need to know everything on day one. We're looking for someone who is switched on, takes initiative, is willing to learn and wants to build a career .
Experience & Qualifications
Previous estimating or purchasing experience is not essential. We are open to applicants from a range of backgrounds, including:
- Architecture graduates
- Construction management graduates
- Engineering graduates
- Building design / drafting graduates
- TAFE students or graduates
- Candidates with previous construction, manufacturing or administration experience
Essential
- Positive computer skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Good written and verbal communication
- Basic understanding of Microsoft Office / Excel
- Current Australian working rights
Desirable but not essential
- Architecture, construction, engineering or manufacturing experience
- Experience reading architectural or engineering drawings
- Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, Inventor or similar software
- Construction-related qualification, degree or TAFE study
- Previous experience in an office, construction or manufacturing environment
