Fleet Coordinator

This is an on island position.

The Mornington Shire Council is a Local Government Authority providing range of services to the twenty-three islands of the Wellesley Group located 125kms north-west of Burketown, 200kms west of Karumba and 444kms from Mount Isa, in the southern section of the Gulf of Carpentaria, residing within the State of Queensland. The island is 2.5 hours flight from Cairns.

The Role:

The primary role of this position is to oversee all fixed and mobile plant and equipment owned and operated by Council and ensure they are maintained in a safe, cost effective and operational manner. This position will be responsible for ensuring that services, repairs and maintenance are scheduled and carried out in a safe and efficient manner and that all plant and equipment and safe and fit for operational purposes. A mechanical background would be advantageous for assisting the Workshop team.

General Responsibilities (but not limited to):

- Manage and coordinate the organisation’s vehicle, plant, and equipment fleet.
- Schedule vehicle servicing, maintenance, repairs, and pre-Start inspections.
- Ensure all fleet assets are registered, insured, licensed, and compliant with relevant legislation and organisational policies
- Maintain accurate records for vehicles, drivers, servicing, defects, incidents, fuel cards, registrations, and insurance.
- Coordinate allocation and availability of vehicles for staff, departments, projects, or operational requirements.
- Manage relationships with mechanics, suppliers, dealerships, insurers, contractors, and service providers.




- Develop, implement, and review fleet policies, procedures, and safe vehicle use guidelines.
- Ensure drivers are authorised, appropriately licensed, and aware of vehicle use and safety requirements.
- Investigate vehicle accidents, damage, breakdowns, infringements, and insurance claims.
- Monitor compliance with workplace health and safety requirements, road safety standards, and risk management procedures.
- Prepare fleet budgets, reports, forecasts, cost analyses, and recommendations for management.
- Identify opportunities to improve fleet efficiency, reduce costs, and minimise downtime.
- Coordinate fuel cards, GPS tracking systems, and other fleet-related systems.
- Support operational planning by ensuring suitable vehicles and equipment are available when required.
- Promote safe, responsible, and productive vehicle use across the organisation.
- The successful applicant will need a minimum of 3 years industry experience.
