About the role The Accountant (General) provides professional accounting, taxation and financial reporting services to the firm's individual and business clients. The role involves preparing and reviewing financial statements and taxation returns; examining and analysing clients' financial records, income, expenditure and business transactions; preparing BAS, GST and PAYG compliance documentation; and providing accounting, taxation and tax planning advice. The Accountant (General) is also responsible for preparing and reconciling financial records, reviewing accounting records and internal accounting controls, establishing and maintaining accounting and record-keeping systems, and assisting with payroll and Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting.
The role also includes preparing accounting and taxation records for trusts and self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs), conducting financial analysis where required, and liaising with clients, the Australian Taxation Office, ASIC and other relevant authorities regarding accounting, taxation and statutory compliance matters.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare and review financial statements, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements and supporting schedules for individuals, sole traders, partnerships, trusts and small to medium-sized companies.
- Examine and analyse clients' financial records, income, expenditure, operating costs and business transactions to ensure accurate accounting treatment and identify financial and taxation implications.
- Prepare and review annual income tax returns for individuals, sole traders, partnerships, trusts and companies, including calculating taxable income, allowable deductions and tax liabilities in accordance with Australian taxation requirements.
- Prepare and review Business Activity Statements (BAS), GST calculations, PAYG obligations and other taxation compliance documentation for business clients.
- Provide accounting, taxation and tax planning advice to clients, including reviewing business structures and advising on taxation obligations and the financial implications of business activities.
- Prepare and reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and other financial records, and investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies.
- Review clients' accounting records,
supporting documentation and internal accounting controls to ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial information and compliance with applicable accounting, taxation and statutory requirements.
- Establish, maintain and review accounting and record-keeping systems, including bookkeeping processes, payroll and Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting, and assist clients in maintaining accurate financial records using computer-based accounting systems.
- Prepare accounting and taxation records for trusts and self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs), including financial statements, annual tax returns and supporting schedules, where applicable.
- Prepare financial and taxation reports, conduct financial analysis where required, and liaise with clients, the Australian Taxation Office, ASIC and other relevant authorities regarding accounting, taxation and statutory compliance matters.
About you
- A minimum of three years of highly relevant professional accounting experience, preferably within an accounting practice or professional services environment, with demonstrated experience in financial reporting, taxation compliance, accounting records and client accounting services.
- A Bachelor's degree or higher qualification in Accounting, Professional Accounting, Commerce, Finance or a closely related discipline, providing a strong foundation in financial accounting, taxation and business accounting.
- Strong knowledge and practical experience in preparing and reviewing financial statements, profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, general ledgers and supporting financial schedules for individuals and business entities.
- Sound knowledge of Australian taxation and statutory compliance requirements, with practical experience in preparing income tax returns, Business Activity Statements (BAS), GST and PAYG obligations for individuals, sole traders, partnerships, trusts and companies.
- Proficiency in maintaining and reviewing accounting and record-keeping systems, including general ledger accounts, bank reconciliations, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and Single Touch Payroll (STP), with experience using computer-based accounting software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to examine financial records, income, expenditure and business transactions, identify discrepancies and financial or taxation implications, and provide appropriate accounting solutions and recommendations.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain accounting and taxation matters clearly to clients and communicate professionally with the Australian Taxation Office, ASIC and other relevant authorities.
- A high level of accuracy and attention to detail when preparing and reviewing financial records, financial statements and taxation documentation, with the ability to ensure compliance with applicable accounting, taxation and statutory requirements.
- Strong qualified integrity and ethical standards, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a professional accounting team while maintaining the confidentiality of clients' financial and taxation information.
