Wagga Wagga

Picture this.

A young person leaves their community.

They're a long way from home.

New surroundings. New people. Early mornings. Expectations. Structure.

For some, it might be the first time they've been able to clearly see what comes next.

Over the following months, they train.

They learn. They get pushed. They get supported.

They build skills, confidence and relationships.

And eventually, they head home with something they didn't arrive with.

A pathway into a genuine career.

A regular income.

More choices about what comes next.

And something their family, younger siblings and community can see is possible too.

Now zoom out.

Because behind that young person is a program.

Behind the program are people.

And behind those people is an organisation that needs to be financially strong, operationally sound and commercially smart enough to make sure the prospect is still there for the next person.

That's the organisation you'll be helping to lead.

You probably didn't choose the community sector because you had a burning desire to manage a bigger P&L.;

But you've been around long enough to know something.

Purpose needs a strong business underneath it.

Without sustainable funding, good contracts, sensible budgets, healthy cash flow and proper forward planning, even the best programs eventually run into trouble.

This growing organisation delivers workforce development, leadership, organisational culture and capability programs across NSW, Victoria and the Northern Territory by partnering with Defence, government, industry and Indigenous communities to create impact.

Over the last 12 months, it's doubled in size.

There are now around 65 people across the broader organisation, delivering programs that can have a very real impact on individuals, families and communities.

And the next chapter isn't simply about getting bigger.

It's about getting stronger.

That's where you come in.

The two managing directors have made the decision to step back from the day-to-day running of the business, allowing them to focus more on working "on" the business rather than "in" it.

As General Manager - Finance & Operations, you'll work closely with both Directors and lead a team of seven direct reports spanning program leadership,

HR and operations, finance, business development, and RTO development

It's broad and deliberately so.

Because they don't need a finance person who only wants to talk finance. And they don't need an operational leader who thinks the numbers are somebody else's problem.

They need someone who understands that social impact and commercial discipline aren't competing priorities.

One makes the other possible.

You'll oversee budgets, cash flow, P&Ls;, balance sheets, grants and acquittals.

You'll bring discipline to financial and operational reporting, strengthen internal controls and make sure the organisation is prepared when government-funded programs are audited.

But perhaps more importantly, you'll spend more time looking at;

What does the next six months look like? The next twelve? Where are the risks? What happens when a major contract finishes? Where should the organisation invest? Which opportunities should we chase?

Because growth for growth's sake isn't particularly clever.

Sustainable growth is.

A big part of what's next is diversifying the revenue base.

More multi-year contracts More geographic reach. Current capabilities. New opportunities.

You'll work alongside the owners, Business Development Lead and Manager Operations & Performance to assess those opportunities.

Not simply: Can we win this?

But: Should we?

Can we deliver it properly? Does it stack up financially?

And does it create the kind of impact this organisation exists to create in the first place?

That's why your financial acumen matters.

But numbers are only half of this job.

The other half is people. You'll lead a diverse, multidisciplinary team spread across multiple locations.

And your first job isn't to arrive with a shiny transformation plan and announce how everything's going to work from now on.

It's to understand.

Go and see the programs.

Meet the people delivering them, spend time with the teams.

Understand the communities they work with.

Ask questions.

Listen.

Then earn the right to challenge what could work better.

That matters here.

Experience within Indigenous organisations, community services, not-for-profits or similar environments would be incredibly valuable.

So would a practical understanding of Indigenous communities and families.

An Indigenous leader with the commercial and operational experience to match would be highly regarded.

You can be decisive and still listen.

You can hold someone accountable and still have a coffee with them afterwards.

They're looking for someone approachable, consistent and collaborative.

Someone who backs their people, gives constructive feedback and develops the people around them.

Someone who can have a laugh.

No ivory tower required.

There's also an important piece about building capability within the team.

The right person won't find that threatening.

They'll see it as part of the job.

Because good leadership isn't about making yourself indispensable. It's about building something capable of succeeding without you.

The role is based in Wagga Wagga, with flexible working arrangements and consideration for the right person who can commute two or three days each week.

You'll also need to complete a National Police Check and Working With Children Check.

You've proved you can run an organisation.

Maybe the more interesting question now is, why this opportunity?

Because somewhere at the other end of the forecast you're building, the contract you're negotiating or the decision you're making is another program.

Another community.

Another young person arrives on their first day, wondering what comes next.

You won't be the person changing their life.

There are brilliant people much closer to the ground doing that work every day.

This role is to make sure they have a strong enough organisation behind them to keep doing it.
