About The Role

Mainswest is seeking experienced Horizontal Directional Drillers (HDD) and HDD Offsiders to join our growing team. Working on major utility and infrastructure projects across Western Australia, you will play a key role in the installation and maintenance of underground services in a safety-focused environment.

These are Perth-Based, full-time positions working Monday-Friday, with overtime opportunities available as required.

Horizontal Directional Drillers

Key Responsibilities

- Operate Vermeer D23x30 and D8x12 HDD rigs.
- Use Digitrak Falcon locating systems to accurately track bore paths.
- Plan and execute bores in accordance with project requirements and site conditions.
- Mix and manage drilling fluids to suit varying ground conditions.
- Install underground infrastructure to Client standards.
- Operate vacuum trucks and other plant as required.
- Interpret BYDA and utility locating plans.
- Ensure all underground services are identified, located, and protected.
- Complete all required project documentation, including JHAs, pre-starts, permits, and bore logs.
- Maintain a strong commitment to safety, quality, and environmental standards.





Essential Requirements

- Demonstrated HDD experience.
- Experience operating Vermeer HDD rigs and Digitrak locating systems.
- Ability to plan and execute bores and manage drilling fluids.

HDD Offsider

Key Responsibilities

- Assist HDD Drillers with the installation of underground utilities.
- Locate, expose, and protect underground services through potholing and excavation.
- Assist with site setup, drilling operations, and equipment maintenance.
- Support vacuum excavation activities.
- Read and interpret utility locating plans and instructions.
- Complete project paperwork, including JHAs, pre-starts, and permits.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and productive worksite.

Essential Requirements

- Previous civil construction, utilities, telecommunications, or underground services experience preferred.
- Willingness to learn HDD operations and develop within the industry.

Essential Requirements For Both Roles

- Current First Aid and CPR certificate.
- Construction White Card.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment.

Advantageous For Both Roles

- MR, HR, or HC Drivers Licence.
- Certificate III in Trenchless Technology or Civil Construction.
- Excavator, Quick-Cut Saw, and other relevant plant tickets.
- Identify, Locate, and Protect Underground Services qualification.
- Traffic Management (BWTM/TC).
- Western Power Specific Induction and Qualifications.
