About The Role As Head of Department , you'll play a critical academic leadership role at CGA, leading your department across all learning modes and ensuring consistently excellent teaching, learning and assessment.

You'll work directly with the Principal and collaborate closely with Deans, teachers and other academic leaders to strengthen teaching quality, develop staff, oversee curriculum and examinations, and use data to improve student outcomes.

The role supports teachers and students across CGA's different learning modes, including group classes, small-group sessions, partnerships and da Vinci learning.

You'll also remain an active classroom practitioner, modelling exceptional online teaching and digital pedagogy.

Time Allocation: 10 release periods out of 22 teaching periods





What you'll do

- Lead and manage your department across all CGA learning modes
- Drive consistently high standards of teaching, learning and assessment
- Conduct learning walks, lesson observations and recording reviews, providing meaningful feedback and coaching
- Lead regular department meetings focused on teaching practice, curriculum, student progress and professional development
- Mentor, onboard and develop teachers, including new da Vinci teachers
- Support teacher performance through professional growth cycles, appraisals and targeted intervention where required
- Lead curriculum planning and review, ensuring courses and schemes of work align with relevant A-Level specifications and international requirements
- Keep your team informed of curriculum and examination-board changes
- Oversee internal and external examination preparation, moderation and post-exam analysis
- Ensure compliance with JCQ and relevant examination-board requirements
- Use assessment and benchmarking data to monitor student progress and identify opportunities for intervention or extension
- Work with teachers, Deans and the Inclusion Manager to support students requiring additional academic intervention
- Act as an escalation point for complex academic concerns and engage with parents where additional support is required
- Review student reports and ensure high-quality, timely academic feedback
- Champion excellent digital pedagogy and ensure effective use of CGA's core learning platforms




- Collaborate with digital learning and emerging technology leaders to explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning
- Support recruitment, induction and ongoing development of departmental staff
- Teach classes as directed by the Principal and model exemplary classroom practice
- Contribute to parent evenings, school events, professional development and wider CGA initiatives

About You

- A qualified and experienced secondary teacher with strong subject expertise
- An experienced or emerging academic leader who can inspire and develop others
- Strong understanding of A-Level curriculum, assessment and examination requirements
- Experience with international examination programmes is highly desirable
- Confident using student performance data to inform teaching, intervention and departmental strategy
- Skilled in curriculum development, assessment planning and quality assurance
- Comfortable providing constructive feedback, coaching and performance support to teachers
- Confident with digital learning platforms and online teaching
- Passionate about innovative education and the effective use of emerging technologies
- An excellent communicator who can build strong relationships with students, parents, teachers and senior leaders
- Highly organised, collaborative and committed to continuous improvement
- Committed to inclusive teaching and maintaining consistently high academic standards

What success looks like You'll build a department where teachers feel supported and challenged to continually improve, curriculum and assessment are consistently solid, and student progress is closely understood and acted upon.

You'll combine strong academic leadership with excellent classroom practice, using evidence, collaboration and innovation to help students and teachers perform at their best.
