Administration Assistant — small Nedlands business, flexible hours

Hay Interiors has been making curtains in Perth since 1969. We're a genuine maker, not a reseller — our curtains and Roman blinds are cut, sewn and finished by hand in our own workroom, attached to our Nedlands showroom on Stirling Highway. The business is owned and run by Annie, a master curtain maker who trained in Southampton, England. She currently does everything: consulting with clients, measuring, quoting, ordering, scheduling. There is more work than one person can do well, which is why this role exists.

What you'd be doing

Most of the job is administration:

- Placing and tracking fabric and component orders with suppliers, and chasing what's late
- Booking Annie's consultations and measures, and keeping her diary workable
- Answering the phone and email, and responding to enquiries
- Helping prepare quotes and invoices
- Keeping job records and supplier information organised

The rest is being the person who steps out when someone comes in. You'd be working at your desk, not stationed in the showroom — but Annie is often out at client consultations, and our curtain makers are in the workroom focused on their work, so when a client walks in, you're the one who goes out to meet them. You'd welcome them, show them where the different fabric ranges are, and book them a time with Annie. You don't need to know anything about curtains to do this, and we don't expect you to sell. What we need is someone with the judgement to know what they can handle and what should wait for Annie. Annie is always reachable by phone, and you'll be properly shown the ropes.

What we're looking for

- Solid administrative experience — ideally in a small business, trade, building or design environment
- Genuinely organised, and accurate with details like measurements, order numbers and supplier codes
- Comfortable and warm with people in person and on the phone
- Confident working on your own for stretches of the day
- Competent with email and Excel

We currently run on email and spreadsheets. That works, but it could be better — if you have ideas about tidying up how things are tracked, you'll have a free hand to improve it.

Hours

20–25 hours a week, with scope to increase as the role grows. We're genuinely flexible about how those hours fall. School hours suit us fine, as do fixed days off — 10am to 3pm, three or four longer days, we can work around what you need. We're open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm, and never weekends.

Why you might like it

It's a small, settled business with a long history and a good reputation — trading since 1969, with clients who've been coming back for decades. We're looking for someone who wants to stay. This isn't a role we want to fill again next year, and the longer you're here the more valuable you become, as you get to know our suppliers, our clients and how Annie works.

There's scope for the hours and the responsibility to grow if that's what you want. If you're after school-hours work, or you've stepped back from full time and want something steady and worthwhile, this could suit you well.

$32–$36 per hour plus superannuation, depending on experience. Part-time permanent, with annual and personal leave.

Apply through Seek with your CV and a short note about your administrative experience.
