Employment Opportunity The Human Resources Branch provides strategic leadership and advice to build a high-performing, inclusive and future-ready workforce. The branch leads workforce planning, organisational capability, diversity and inclusion, employee relations, leadership development, wellbeing, and people reporting and insights.
As Assistant Secretary, Human Resources Branch, you will be a key member of the department's senior leadership team, partnering across the organisation to shape workforce strategy, strengthen organisational capability and support the delivery of departmental priorities. You will lead a contemporary people function that uses data, evidence, and collaboration to inform decision-making, enhance employee experience and drive continuous improvement.
Reporting to the Chief People and Strategy Officer, you will contribute to the department's broader strategic agenda and APS reforms, while fostering a culture of inclusion, accountability, and high performance. You will help ensure the department can attract, develop, mobilise and retain the talent needed to meet current and future challenges.
In this role, you will provide enterprise leadership across the department's people agenda, partnering with senior leaders to build a capable, high-performing and future-capable workforce.
The Assistant Secretary, Human Resources leads accessible, inclusive and integrated people services while fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and delivery. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to Closing the Gap by supporting Priority Reforms, strengthening cultural capability,
and valuing diverse experiences and perspectives to enhance service delivery, workforce capability and innovation.
You will
- Lead the development and delivery of contemporary people strategies that strengthen workforce capability, organisational performance and employee experience.
- Drive strategic workforce planning, talent management, and workforce mobility initiatives to ensure the department has the capabilities required now and into the future.
- Lead workforce transformation and organisational change initiatives that support departmental priorities, APS reforms and the evolving future of work.
- Foster a diverse, inclusive, and culturally safe workplace where all employees can contribute and thrive.
- Provide expert advice and guidance on complex people, employment and workforce matters.
- Use workforce insights, reporting and evidence-based decision making to improve organisational outcomes and inform strategic priorities.
- Build solid partnerships with senior leaders and key stakeholders to understand business needs and deliver practical, people-centred solutions.
- Work collaboratively across corporate and business areas to implement the department's People Strategy.
How you can help us make a difference To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
- Extensive experience leading human resources and workforce functions in a dynamic organisation.
- A strong track record of developing and implementing workforce strategies that deliver measurable organisational outcomes.
- Exceptional leadership, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across all levels of the department.
- Experience leading organisational change, workforce transformation and reform initiatives.
- Strong strategic thinking, judgement and problem-solving capability, supported by effective use of workforce data and insights.
- Resilience, adaptability and demonstrated ability to deliver outcomes in a complex and changing environment.
To be eligible for employment at the Attorney-General’s Department applicants must be Australian citizens.
Applicants offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a police record check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a specified clearance level. The successful applicant must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information.
Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created from this process, and will be active for 18 months after the date of this gazettal.
