Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative – Justice & Community Services now has the following vacancy at our Shepparton Office:
Bail and Remand Case Manager
Full-time, 38 hours per week | Fixed-term until 30 June 2028
This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of Section 12 of the Equal Prospect Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.
About the Role The ‘Dunguludja Dana’ Bail and Remand Program delivers self-determined, culturallyled services that support Aboriginal people to obtain bail, meet bail conditions while living in the community, and transition safely from remand to the community within the Shepparton region.
The Bail and Remand Case Manager will provide culturally safe, Aboriginal-led case management, address barriers to successful community-based outcomes and help reduce ongoing involvement in the justice system.
About You
Qualifications and Registrations:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Community Services, SocialWork, Youth Work, Psychology, Justice, Welfare or a related discipline, or significant equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience working within Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, justice, corrections, court, community services or related sectors.
Knowledge and skills:
- Sound knowledge of the Victorian criminal justice system, including the Bail Act 1977 (Vic), bail and remand, court processes, community-based orders, bail conditions and pathways from custody to community, together with the factors affecting an Aboriginal person’s ability to obtain and maintain bail.
- Strong understanding of the barriers experienced by Aboriginal people in the justice system, including colonisation, systemic disadvantage, over-representation in custody and intergenerational trauma, and a commitment to self-determination, Aboriginal cultural safety and culturally responsive practice.
- Knowledge of local and regional housing, health, family violence,
alcohol and other drug, mental health, employment, education and community support services relevant to people on bail or transitioning from remand, including risk assessment, safety planning, information sharing, confidentiality and relevant legislative and organisational requirements.
- Highly developed case management skills, including assessment, goal setting, case planning, advocacy, referrals, monitoring and review, with the ability to support clients to understand and comply with bail conditions using strengths-based and trauma-informed approaches.
- Demonstrated ability to build respectful, trusting and culturally safe relationships with Aboriginal people experiencing complex barriers, and to establish effective stakeholder relationships with courts, legal services, Corrections Victoria, Victoria Police and other justice and community service agencies.
- Strong advocacy, negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients, families, Elders, community members and professional stakeholders.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary, culturally led team; travel throughout the Shepparton region; manage competing priorities; maintain accurate records; and meet reporting requirements.
