The role is focused on developing students’ basketball skills, confidence, teamwork and understanding of the game, while providing a positive, inclusive and enjoyable sporting experience. The Coach will contribute to the College’s broader Sport program and uphold Moriah College’s expectations regarding student wellbeing, sportsmanship, conduct and participation.

Key Responsibilities

- Deliver engaging, structured and age-appropriate basketball training sessions to students.
- Develop students’ basketball skills, including passing, shooting, dribbling, movement, positioning and defence.
- Develop students’ understanding of the game, including teamwork, decision-making, game awareness and tactical play.
- Provide practical coaching, encouragement and constructive feedback to support individual student development.
- Coach and support teams during school fixtures and competitions, where required.
- Encourage students to demonstrate effort, resilience, teamwork, discipline and good sportsmanship.
- Create a positive and inclusive coaching setting that supports students of varying experience, confidence and ability levels.
- Build positive relationships with students and encourage participation, enjoyment and a strong sense of team.
- Supervise students appropriately and maintain a strong focus on their safety, wellbeing and positive participation during training sessions and fixtures.
- Communicate effectively with the Head of Boys Sport and relevant Sport staff regarding student development, attendance, behaviour, injuries and team requirements.
- Assist with the appropriate setup, pack-up and care of basketball equipment and facilities, where required.




- Represent Moriah College in a professional, positive and respectful manner when coaching at school fixtures, competitions and other sporting activities.
- Work collaboratively with the wider Sport team to support the delivery and development of the College’s basketball program.
- Comply with all College policies, procedures, child safeguarding requirements, codes of conduct and work health and safety requirements.

Essential Criteria

- Demonstrated basketball coaching and/or playing experience.
- Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals, skills and game play.
- Ability to engage, motivate and develop secondary school-aged boys.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver purposeful, engaging and well-organised basketball training sessions.
- A genuine passion for sport and developing young people through basketball.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students.
- A positive, energetic, patient and professional approach.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of the College’s broader Sport program.
- Reliable and punctual, with a strong commitment to attending scheduled training sessions and fixtures.
- A current Working with Children Check (WWCC), or the ability to obtain one prior to commencing employment.




- Commitment to student safety, wellbeing, inclusion and positive sporting participation.

Desirable criteria

- Previous experience coaching within a school, representative or club workplace.
- Experience coaching students with varying levels of ability.
