Burnie, TAS | Full-Time | Trade Qualified
Build the equipment that powers Australian mining. Elphinstone is a proud Tasmanian manufacturer, producing underground mining equipment, electrical harnesses and Defence vehicle structures from our Burnie and Wynyard sites. If you're a skilled Diesel Fitter looking for varied, hands-on trade work with real purpose, we want to hear from you.
About the role
We're seeking an experienced Diesel Fitter to join our Production team at Burnie, reporting to the Production Development Workshop Supervisor. You'll assemble, fit and test the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components that go into our diesel-powered mining equipment — working to specification, to schedule, and to a standard our customers rely on in some of the harshest conditions on earth. It's a role where trade skill, precision and problem-solving come together every day, and where no two builds are quite the same.
Key responsibilities
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications and bills of materials to assemble and fit components accurately
- Install and fit engines, transmissions, axles, final drives and other drivetrain components to OEM and Company standards
- Fit, test and pressure-check hydraulic systems - cylinders, pumps, valves and hoses - for leak-free performance
- Use precision measuring equipment to check dimensional accuracy, alignment and torque against engineering tolerances
- Perform functional testing, fault-finding and rectification of assemblies prior to hand-over
- Pass on your knowledge and experience by mentoring Trade Assistants and Apprentices
- Support new product introduction (NPI) builds and continuous improvement across the workshop
About you
- A Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technician, or an equivalent trade qualification
- Strong mechanical ability, with a knack for troubleshooting and fault diagnosis
- A sharp eye for detail and a genuine commitment to quality and safety
- Great time management and the ability to juggle multiple tasks in a busy workshop
- A team-first attitude - you communicate well, support your workmates, and take pride in your work
About us At Elphinstone, our most important asset is our people. Every team member has a voice and plays a part in contributing to our success. We take pride in creating an innovative, cooperative and open culture where all staff are respected, empowered and valued.
