The Science and Australian National Botanic Gardens Branch leads science and conservation planning and policy for Parks Australia, and conducts research in conservation and biodiversity management through a range of programs. We engage in and coordinate diverse research partnerships and ensure First Nations knowledge and creative solutions are core to our work, enabling us to enhance engagement and embed science into decision-making at all levels. Our work includes:

- Strategic science planning and prioritisation and shaping research partnerships for Parks Australia.
- Leading cross-cutting research to support Parks Australia – in areas such as climate change adaptation, nature positive and knowledge weaving.
- Providing scientific support for Protected Areas policy and Park Management Plans.
- Managing the Australian National Botanic Gardens, home to our Branch and the nation’s largest living collection of native plants.
- Innovation in the cross-cutting application of new technologies and data analytics to meet science and application outcomes.
- Facilitating research and science capacity building and education.
- Curating national collections of biological data and conserving and protecting plants through systematics research, seed banking and ex situ conservation.

- Evaluation and reporting to understand management effectiveness and performance of our parks, gardens and agency.

The Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) is the nation's most diverse collection of Australian native plants. We directly contribute to safe-guarding Australia's plant species from extinctions and are responsible for leading, building and sharing knowledge of our Australian flora. The ANBG works closely with biodiversity science programs - the Australian Biological Resources Study, the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research, the National Seed Bank, and Biodiversity Informatics - in partnerships for research, for management of physical and digital biological collections, and for management of fundamental national biodiversity data and information accessed nationally and internationally. The Facilities & Assets Support Officer supports the maintenance and operation of buildings, infrastructure and assets across the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Working as part of a team and under general direction, the position undertakes maintenance activities, assists with contractor coordination and contributes to both planned and reactive maintenance works. The successful candidate will develop site knowledge over time and apply sound judgement when responding to maintenance requests and operational priorities.

In this role you will be responsible for:

- Undertake facilities and asset maintenance activities, including inspections, repairs and maintenance works to buildings, fixtures, fittings, furniture, equipment and associated infrastructure. Identify and report maintenance requirements and assist with coordinating and completing approved works.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders regarding maintenance requests, operational issues and facilities related activities, and provide relevant information to support operational decision making.
- Under general direction, undertake a range of facilities, asset and infrastructure maintenance activities including carpentry, painting, paving, plumbing, irrigation and other trade related works, and assist with the maintenance of mechanical, electrical, lighting and pumping infrastructure systems.
- Coordinate site access, inductions and day to day liaison with contractors undertaking maintenance and repair works, and assist supervisors with contractor engagement activities as required.




- Operate and maintain workshop facilities safely and efficiently, and read interpret and work from technical drawings, plans and specifications.
- Share in rostered on-call duties to support site operational needs out of standard working hours.
- Undertake the safe use, routine inspection and maintenance of plant and equipment in accordance with ANBG policies, procedures and manufacturer requirements.
- Apply Australian National Botanic Gardens WHS policies and procedures and participate in hazard identification, risk assessment and incident reporting activities as required.

Additional requirements

- Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.
- Note that you may be required to perform occasional out-of-hours and weekend work.
- Participate in the Park’s Duty Officer Roster involving after hours monitoring of emergency alarms and phones.
- Wear an official uniform supplied by the department, including during field operations (as applicable), in accordance with the department’s uniform policy.
- Wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.

- Note that the duties of the position require a high degree of manual and physical activity, with a combination of outdoor and office-based work, and potentially hot and humid indoor environments. Applicants should possess an appropriate level of functional physical fitness.
