Financial Controller The Role
We're looking for an experienced, technically strong Financial Controller to own the financial control environment, treasury framework and core finance processes behind Archies' rapidly growing global business.
This is not a traditional Financial Controller role focused on simply getting the month-end done.
Our Finance Manager and finance team own the day-to-day execution of finance. Your role is to make sure the systems, controls, processes and frameworks behind that execution are robust, scalable and effective.
You'll sit between our CFO and Finance Manager, providing the technical, systems and control layer across a multi-entity business operating in Australia, the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and New Zealand.
You'll own everything from financial controls, tax and statutory compliance through to treasury, cash forecasting, accounting policy and audit readiness. Just as importantly, you'll help us rethink how finance operates — using systems, automation and AI to progressively remove repetitive manual work and move towards exception-based review.
Ultimately, your mandate is clear: build the financial control and systems environment that allows Archies to keep scaling globally without losing control.
About Archies
Archies Footwear started with a simple idea: create a better pair of thongs by building genuine arch support into the casual footwear Australians already love.
Today, we're one of Australia's fastest-growing footwear brands, with operations across Australia, the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and New Zealand, and a rapidly expanding e-commerce and wholesale business.
As Archies grows globally, the complexity behind our finance function is growing with it.
Multiple entities. Multiple currencies. Multiple bank and digital-bank accounts. Different tax jurisdictions. E-commerce platforms, wholesale customers, payment providers, 3PLs and an increasingly connected finance technology stack.
We're now looking for a Financial Controller who can help build the finance infrastructure required for the next stage of that growth.
What You'll Own
You'll work closely with our CFO and lead our Finance Manager and the wider finance team.
You'll
- Own the Group month-end and year-end control framework, ensuring financial reporting, balance-sheet reconciliations, provisions, inventory accounting and other material areas are accurate, reviewed and supported.
- Own our financial control workplace, including approval authorities, segregation of duties,
payment controls, journal controls, master data, system access and finance policies.
- Be the primary finance contact for our external tax advisors across Australia, the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and New Zealand, ensuring tax obligations are understood, controlled and completed on time.
- Lead our statutory reporting and audit readiness processes and act as the senior finance contact for external auditors and accountants.
- Own our accounting policy framework and prepare or oversee technical accounting positions for material or complex transactions.
- Own the Group treasury operating framework across our global banking and digital-banking environment.
- Drive reliable daily and weekly cash visibility and own the cash-flow forecasting framework, including forecast accuracy, assumptions and early identification of liquidity risks.
- Monitor foreign currency exposures, cross-border cash movements, banking concentration and idle cash, providing explicit recommendations to the CFO.
- Own the finance systems and automation roadmap, identifying where integrations, automation and AI can remove repetitive manual work and improve control.
- Build processes around a "system prepares / human reviews exceptions" philosophy wherever practical.
- Identify recurring accounting, reconciliation or control issues and drive them through to root-cause resolution rather than accepting repeated manual fixes.
- Lead and develop our Finance Manager and strengthen review, accountability and escalation disciplines across the wider finance team.
This is an ownership role. You won't be expected to personally process every transaction, prepare every reconciliation or run every payment. The Finance Manager and the finance team own operational execution.
You own the environment in which that execution happens — the controls, systems, standards, review and escalation that make sure finance works properly.
About You
You're a strong Financial Controller who combines technical accounting capability with systems thinking and commercial pragmatism.
You understand that good financial control isn't about creating unnecessary bureaucracy. It's about designing processes that allow a fast-growing business to move quickly while maintaining accuracy, visibility and appropriate safeguards.
When something doesn't reconcile, your instinct isn't simply to fix the number. You want to understand why it happened and stop it happening again.
You're equally comfortable reviewing a complex balance-sheet reconciliation, working through a tax issue with an external advisor, challenging a cash-flow forecast, reviewing banking controls or mapping a finance process to work out how technology could automate it.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- 10+ years of progressive finance experience, with substantial Financial Controller, audit, compliance and multi-entity accounting responsibility.
- CA, CPA or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
- Strong technical accounting and financial-control capability.
- Experience operating in an international or multi-region business.
- Experience coordinating tax and statutory compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong experience with month-end and year-end control, balance-sheet integrity, statutory reporting and external audit.
- Practical treasury experience across multiple entities, banks and currencies, including cash positioning and cash-flow forecasting.
- Experience designing and improving internal controls, policies and scalable finance processes.
- Strong systems aptitude and experience using technology to simplify manual finance processes.
- An interest in the practical application of AI and automation within finance.
- Exceptional attention to detail, documentation and follow-through.
- The judgement to distinguish material financial risk from routine operational issues.
- The ability to communicate technical finance, tax and compliance matters clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
Experience in e-commerce, retail, wholesale or another high-transaction growth environment would be highly regarded. Experience with platforms such as Xero, Shopify, A2X, payment platforms, treasury/banking systems and finance automation or reporting tools would also be advantageous.
But more than anything, we're looking for someone who takes ownership, challenges how things are done and builds better ways of doing them.
The role is based in our Melbourne CBD office, with four days per week in the office.
Interested? Apply through LinkedIn — we'd love to hear from you.
