The AIFS office is located by the banks of the Birrarung Marr (Yarra River) in Naarm (Melbourne). The traditional custodians of the land in which AIFS is located are the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation.

The Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS, or ‘the Institute’) is the Australian Government's key research body in the area of family wellbeing. It is an independent statutory authority established in 1980 under the Family Law Act 1975. It is also home to the Australian Gambling Research Centre (AGRC), established under the Gambling Measure Act 2012 which builds the evidence base on gambling-related harm.

The Institute is an agency within the portfolio of the Department of Social Services (DSS).

Our mission is to conduct high-quality, impartial research into the wellbeing of Australian families, to inform government policy and promote evidence-based practice in the family services sector. We conduct research, provide independent advice and communicate findings to government policymakers, service providers, researchers and the community about factors affecting family wellbeing. Through our research, we contribute to developing policy and practice to promote the wellbeing of families in Australia.





The AIFS First Nations Temporary Employment Register will help us fill future non-ongoing vacancies that may arise at the APS 3 to APS 6 levels, and Executive Level 1 and Executive Level 2 classifications. Positions that become available will be based in our Melbourne office.

We are seeking expressions of interest from motivated and driven Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples with a keen interest in the Research or Corporate space who have skills and experience in a range of areas of expertise, to support the work of the Institute.

- Communications To be eligible for engagement, applicants must:
- Provide evidence of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.
- Be Australian citizens as per section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999. (Candidates who are not Australian citizens may be considered in exceptional circumstances where special approval is provided. For example, applicants with permanent resident status who have applied for Australian citizenship may be considered for engagement.)
- Satisfy a National Australian Police Records check.
- Satisfy any mandatory qualification requirements applicable to the position.
- Satisfy any required conditions of engagement such as a probationary period.




- Satisfy a Working with Children Check if applicable.

Terms

Your application will remain active on the Register until 30 June 2027. You may be contacted at any time about available opportunities for temporary positions that match your qualifications and expertise. All positions are based in Melbourne, Victoria.

Depending on the business needs and operational requirements of the Institute, positions may be offered on a non-ongoing basis for up to 12 months (with the possibility of extension to a maximum term of 18 months) on a full-time or part-time basis.

If ongoing roles become available, temporary employees will have the opportunity to apply for these roles along with all other external applicants through a standard merit-based selection process.
