The Role The APS 6 Formation Work Health and Safety Officer at Headquarters Land Combat College (HQ LCC) provides expert WHS leadership, advice and assurance to support the safe delivery of Army's training mission across the formation. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the role is responsible for coordinating and overseeing WHS activities across seven subordinate schools and training establishments, ensuring compliance with legislative, Defence and Army requirements.

The position serves as the principal WHS subject matter expert, undertaking complex risk analysis, incident investigations, audits and reviews to identify emerging issues and develop effective risk controls.

Working independently, the officer gathers and analyses information from diverse sources to provide evidence-based advice and recommendations to senior leaders. The role also provides guidance and mentorship to subordinate WHS Officers, promotes a positive safety culture and supports continuous improvement. A detailed understanding of Army training and operations is essential to effectively manage risk and enable safe, compliant and mission-ready training outcomes across the formation.

Our Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate for the APS 6 Formation Work Health and Safety Officer role is a skilled WHS professional capable of providing expert advice, governance and leadership within a complex operational environment.

They will possess a solid understanding of Commonwealth WHS legislation, governance frameworks and contemporary risk management practices, together with the ability to quickly acquire and apply subject matter expertise in support of organisational objectives. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgement, initiative and the ability to independently analyse complex issues, conduct investigations and develop practical, evidence-based solutions.

Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills are essential, with the ability to build productive relationships, influence decision-making and provide guidance across diverse work groups. They will demonstrate professionalism, discretion and a commitment to maintaining privacy, confidentiality and integrity when handling sensitive information. Security Clearance:

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.
