We're looking for a go-getter
Not someone waiting to be told what to do next. Someone who sees what a family needs before they ask, picks up the phone, chases the florist, and makes sure every detail lands. Gardenia Funerals is an independent, family-owned Melbourne funeral business with 25 years behind us and nine chapel locations across the city — We're small enough that your work is visible and big enough that there's somewhere to go.
We have a full-time Funeral Consultant role open, based at our North Melbourne office.
The role
You'll be the person a family deals with from their first phone call through to the day itself. That means sitting with people on the worst week of their lives, listening properly, explaining what's possible and what it costs, and then delivering exactly what you promised. It's arranging and conducting. You won't hand the file to someone else once the paperwork is signed — you'll be there on the day, seeing it through.
What you'll do
Arranging
- Meet with families to identify what they need, with sensitivity to their grief, faith, culture, traditions and any special requests
- Know our full range of products and services, and guide families to what genuinely suits them
- Build and communicate the funeral plan
- Complete documentation, establish the client contract, and explain costs and payment terms clearly and honestly
- Liaise with clergy, celebrants, florists, newspapers, cemeteries, crematoria and other suppliers
- Respond promptly to family requests — before they have to follow up
Conducting
- Conduct the service, including performing funeral assistant duties where needed
- Set up services, direct families, provide refreshments, and operate AV and related equipment
- Support families through the ceremony and everything around it
- Attend and support viewings
Day to day
- Office administration, including answering phones
- Washing, preparing and driving company vehicles
- Working alongside a tight team where everyone picks up what needs doing
On-call
One weekend in every five, plus after-hours, weekends and public holidays as rostered. On-call covers arranging funerals, assisting on funerals, and viewings. This is a genuine part of the job, not a footnote — please only apply if the roster works for your life.
About you
Essential
- Previous funeral industry experience
- Current unrestricted Victorian driver's licence
- Solid written and spoken English, and the confidence to lead a room
- At ease working with grieving families and with the deceased
- Proficient on Apple Mac
- Good working knowledge of Melbourne and surrounding suburbs
- Right to work in Australia
What sets you apart
- Initiative. You spot the gap and fill it rather than escalating it.
- Attention to detail. In this industry the small things are the whole thing — a name spelled wrong, a hymn missed, a family member not greeted.
- Planning. You can hold multiple funerals at different stages and keep every one on track.
- Solutions, not problems. Things go wrong. You fix them quietly and keep the family's day intact.
- Resilience and adaptability. Fast-paced, emotionally demanding, and no two weeks the same.
- Cultural sensitivity. Melbourne is diverse and our families reflect that.
Supervisory or team leadership experience in a service-driven organisation is well regarded.
What we offer
- A permanent full-time position with an established independent operator
- Genuine variety — you arrange, you conduct, you're across the whole process
- Ongoing training and professional development
- A direct line to the owner, not six layers of management
