Our team

This role is based within the Mineral Potential of Australia Section, part of the Mineral Systems Branch in the Minerals, Energy and Groundwater Division. The Mineral Potential of Australia Section will support the responsible development of a diverse mineral resources sector by providing precompetitive mineral potential assessments and data to support exploration and drive new mineral discoveries.

This role will contribute to the delivery of Geoscience Australia’s Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative. Under the initiative, the Mineral Potential of Australia Section will lead the delivery of predictive national maps for all critical minerals and strategic materials. This role contributes to these outcomes under limited direction, working as part of a section project team.





The role The Geoscientist (Mineral Potential) applies technical knowledge to undertake geoscientific analysis, interpretation and data management in support of mineral systems research. You will contribute to developing predictive mineral potential mapping by integrating multidisciplinary datasets and producing high-quality outputs to support industry and government decision-making.

In this role you will:

- Develop mappable spatial proxies of mineral system processes using multi-disciplinary data for input to mineral potential assessments.
- Read, extract and summarise key geological and geochemical information from reports and publications to assist in building an understanding of specific mineral systems.
- Provide Geographic Information System (GIS) support, including managing, processing and visualising geoscientific data
- Coordinate and contribute to collection, analysis and quality assurance of geoscientific data, ensuring adherence to established processes.
- Prepare technical documentation, spatial layers and visualisations that communicate scientific findings to various audiences.
- Collaborate effectively within the project team and contribute to a safe, inclusive and positive team culture.

To be successful in the role you will:

- Demonstrate a passion for geoscience and its role in supporting Australia’s resource sector and the energy transition, with a focus on critical minerals.
- Apply sound problem-solving and analytical skills to identify, integrate and interpret datasets to develop scientifically robust interpretations.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with team members and stakeholders across research, government and industry.
- Take responsibility for delivering quality outputs under limited direction and proactively manage workload priorities.
- Uphold APS Values and Code of Conduct and model integrity, honesty and professionalism.

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

- A tertiary qualification in geoscience or an equivalent field, or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated experience and technical capability in at least one of the following areas: mineral systems analysis, geology, geophysical interpretation or geochemistry.




- Proficiency with GIS software for data manipulation and spatial analysis.
- Ability to critically evaluate information, identify relevant datasets and integrate data to support mineral potential assessment.
- Experience in coding for spatial analysis (e.g., Python, R) is desirable but not essential.
