Lawyer – Native Title & Commercial Law
Graduate – 3 years post admission | Perth CBD | Immediate start Want to do interesting legal work that actually makes a difference?
Cross Country Native Title Services is looking for a Graduate to 3-year post admission Lawyer to join our boutique Perth CBD team.
We work with Aboriginal organisations, Traditional Owners and prescribed bodies corporate on complex and interesting legal matters. Our work is varied, challenging and often involves finding practical solutions to issues where there is no straightforward answer.
If you’re looking for a career where you can learn quickly, take on responsibility, work directly with clients and see the real-world impact of your legal work, this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
As we are a boutique specialist practice, you won’t be one of dozens of junior lawyers working somewhere in the background. You’ll be part of the team, involved in the work and given the opportunity to develop your skills from day one.
What will you actually be doing?
Your work will include a broad mix of native title, corporations, commercial and litigation matters, including:
- Federal Court and National Native Title Tribunal proceedings
- Negotiating and drafting Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs)
- Negotiating and drafting cultural heritage agreements
- Providing corporations law advice to prescribed bodies corporate
- Advising Aboriginal organisations on governance and corporate issues
- Providing commercial advice in relation to mining, energy and agricultural projects
- Attending client meetings, negotiations, court and other proceedings
- Working directly with clients to understand their objectives and develop practical legal solutions
You’ll work closely with experienced senior lawyers who will support you while giving you increasing responsibility as your skills and confidence develop. What could your first 12 months look like?
We want you to learn by doing, rather than simply watching from the sidelines.
During your first year, you could expect to:
✦ Meet clients and attend client meetings - Develop your ability to understand a client's objectives, explain legal issues clearly and build professional relationships.
✦ Get involved in negotiations - See how complex native title and commercial agreements are negotiated and have the opportunity to contribute to the process.
✦ Drafting - Work on ILUAs, cultural heritage agreements, board papers, legal advice and other documents that have a practical purpose and are used by real clients.
✦ Develop litigation experience - Assist with Federal Court and National Native Title Tribunal matters.
✦ Build corporations law expertise - Work with Aboriginal corporations and prescribed bodies corporate on governance, and corporations law issues.
✦ Take on increasing responsibility - As you develop, you'll be trusted with more complex tasks, greater client contact and more responsibility for managing matters.
You won't be expected to know everything on day one. We will help you build the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to become an excellent native title lawyer.
About you
You don't need to have extensive native title experience.
We’re looking for someone who is bright, curious, practical and genuinely interested in developing a career in this area of law.
You will ideally
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills
- Enjoy solving complex problems and finding practical solutions
- Be interested in both advisory and litigation work
- Be organised and able to manage competing priorities
- Be comfortable working independently while also contributing to a small team
- Enjoy working directly with clients
- Have a willingness to learn and take on new challenges
- Be willing to travel for client meetings, negotiations or court appearances when required
