About the Legal Services Temporary Register

Register your interest to be considered for future casual, non-ongoing (temporary) or temporary transfer opportunities in providing legal services with ASQA including the conduct of legal proceedings before the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART).

We are seeking lawyers with a broad cross-section of legal skills, experiences and qualifications to apply to our Legal Services Temporary Register at the Executive Level 1 (Senior Legal Officer) and APS Level 6 (Legal Officer) classifications to work in the General Counsel and Review and Appeals Teams.

The Legal Services Temporary Register assists with filling positions within ASQA, and opportunities may be offered for an initial periods of up to 12 months, with possibility to extend for a further 6 months, for a total maximum period of 18 months, or alternatively, for short, casual stints for specific work on an hourly basis.

About the General Counsel Team The primary role of General Counsel (GC) and the GC team is to identify and manage ASQA’s legal risk and to enable and support ASQA’s role and function as the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator (the NVR).

The General Counsel is responsible for a governance framework and practices that ensures ASQA’s compliance with the Legal Services Directions (including ASQA’s model litigant obligations) and required reporting against the Directions.

About the Review and Appeals Teams The Review Team has responsibility for undertaking statutory reviews of primary decisions to ensure that ASQA’s decisions support the integrity of the national qualifications issued by training providers,



and to ensure that all stakeholders can have confidence in the decisions made by ASQA.

The Appeals Team manages applications to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) for review of ASQA’s regulatory decisions). This may involve engaging and instructing legal service providers to act, advice and appear on ASQA’s behalf.

The legislative framework under which the Team operates largely comprises the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011 (the NVR Act) and the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act).

- Under Section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian Citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed, in writing, to the contrary.
