We are seeking an APS6 Librarian for a non-ongoing role until 30 June 2027, with the possibility of ongoing employment.
Based in Melbourne or Sydney, this hybrid position is available full-time, with part-time arrangements of at least three days per week also considered.
Library Services is a national team that provides Tribunal members and staff with the information and resources they need to do their work. The Librarian manages the collection for their nominated Registry and supports users through research and reference services, updates on new and relevant information, database training, and access to digital resources.

Library collection development and maintenance: Organise and maintain nominated collections including assisting with developing and updating the ART’s Library Management system, monitor information needs, update library intranet pages, help review collection policies, identify and assess possible additional resources to meet Tribunal needs. Conduct sophisticated search strategies, assessing the suitability and usefulness of various resources.
Knowledge and Advice:
Research complex legal matters related to Tribunal cases, country of origin information, and other specialised topics. Use a range of authoritative online legal research databases, such as Westlaw, LexisNexis and CCH, as well as physical and digital resources such as law reports. Provide expertise in online resources, including training of library users. Share knowledge and provide assistance and support to team members as needed.
Service delivery: Deliver high quality, responsive reference and research services for Tribunal members and staff within required timeframes. Produce and deliver current awareness services to keep Tribunal members and staff updated on latest developments for certain topics or areas of law. Help develop and deliver training programs and support for library users in effective search techniques, how to access online and print information services and e-learning resources.
Stakeholder Management: Builds and sustains working relationships, liaises with a range of internal users including team members. Consult with and provide advice to internal stakeholders, anticipate and respond to their needs and expectations. Manage relationships to support and achieve work area and Tribunal goals.
Manage expectations regarding the availability of physical resources and negotiate deadlines for research requests and scheduling training session times. Interaction with external stakeholders is limited but conducted professionally when required.
Continuous improvement: Undertake and contribute to reviews of the library’s network processes and services,
and support projects that improve library and information services.
This may involve developing short term plans to implement change, as well as contributing to longer term strategic planning. Identify and evaluate possible new ways of providing information or support to library users such as new databases or AI tools.
Resource accountability: Provide guidance, support, and training to other team members in the use of databases, research tools, and online resources. Undertake projects such as developing training plans or revising procedural documents and provide updates to the
Assistant Director, Library Services. Monitor the shared mailbox for research queries and enquiries, collaborating with team members to allocate and distribute tasks, including managing shared responsibilities and offering support when needed. Contributes to team meetings providing feedback and input on new processes.
To be successful you will have:
- Experience managing legal library collections and library management systems
- Ability to provide high-quality legal research, reference, and current awareness services.
- Strong judgement and research skills to deliver accurate and timely information.
- Experience developing and delivering library training and user education programs.
- Ability to manage a busy workload, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
Essential:
- Tertiary qualifications in library and/or information management that are recognised for professional (Associate) membership of the Australian Library and Information Association.
