About the role
We are looking for a warm, reliable, and highly organised Legal Assistant / Paralegal to join our Family Law practice.
This is a great opportunity for a 3rd or 4th year law student who has a genuine interest in pursuing a career in Family Law and wants to gain practical experience alongside their studies.
You will be involved in the day-to-day work of the practice, supporting lawyers with client communication, file management, legal research, drafting and matter preparation. We are looking for someone who is keen to learn, takes pride in their work and wants to develop their skills in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Our office is conveniently located in Carnegie, just 50 metres from Carnegie Train Station.
Key responsibilities
- Scheduling client appointments, conferences, and court-related dates
- Opening, maintaining, and closing client files
- Managing file administration, including preparing and sending initial engagement letters and cost agreements
- Assisting with accounts and invoicing
- Communicating with clients, barristers' clerks, valuation providers, process servers, and other external service providers
- Preparing draft letters and emails using templates
- Conducting legal research and assisting with document preparation
- Preparing and drafting divorce applications
- Filing documents through the Commonwealth Courts Portal
- Assisting with briefs, disclosure documents, and matter preparation
- Helping the team manage deadlines, next steps, and client communications
- General administrative support
About you We are looking for someone who is smart, personable, dependable, and genuinely interested in Family Law.
You will ideally be
- Currently studying 3rd or 4th year Law
- Interested in pursuing a career in Family Law
- Reliable, loyal, and consistent
- Highly organised and able to manage competing priorities
- Calm and professional under pressure
- Warm, confident, and professional when communicating with clients
- Careful with detail and comfortable working with templates and processes
- Willing to learn, take initiative and ask questions
- Confident using technology and open to learning new systems
- Discreet and respectful when handling sensitive client information
- Comfortable working in a busy environment
- Interested in developing your skills and growing with the firm
Previous legal or Family Law experience will be highly regarded but is not essential. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate the right attitude, strong organisational skills, attention to detail and a genuine commitment to developing a career in Family Law. Experience with the Commonwealth Courts Portal, divorce applications, disclosure, court filing, client scheduling, or Family Law file management will be advantageous.
