Allygroup is seeking an experienced Privacy and FOI Lawyer to support a high-performing legal team providing advice on privacy, freedom of information, information governance, and administrative law matters. This opportunity offers the chance to work on complex and high-profile privacy and FOI issues, providing practical legal advice to support compliance, risk management, and government accountability obligations. The successful candidate will work closely with legal and business stakeholders, contributing to privacy governance frameworks, FOI processes, information management practices, and regulatory compliance activities.

This engagement is offered for an initial 3-6-month term. Sydney-based candidates are preferred. However, other arrangements will be considered for suitably qualified candidates.

Due to the nature of the work, a current NV1 security clearance is mandatory.

Key responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

- Providing legal advice on privacy, freedom of information, information governance, and administrative law matters
- Supporting privacy compliance frameworks and privacy governance activities
- Advising on the interpretation and application of the Privacy Act, Australian Privacy Principles, and related obligations
- Conducting and reviewing privacy impact assessments and providing privacy-by-design advice for current initiatives and technologies
- Managing privacy incidents, data breaches, complaints, and regulatory enquiries
- Supporting engagement with regulators and coordinating responses to privacy-related investigations and requests
- Managing FOI requests, statutory timeframes, and document search processes
- Preparing draft FOI decisions, statements of reasons, schedules of documents, and related correspondence




- Advising on FOI exemptions, disclosure obligations, and review processes
- Supporting internal reviews, Information Commissioner reviews, and tribunal proceedings
- Developing and maintaining privacy and FOI policies, procedures, guidance materials, and registers
- Delivering privacy and FOI training and awareness activities across the organisation
- Working collaboratively with legal, operational, technical, and corporate stakeholders
- Contributing to effective risk management, governance, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintaining high-quality legal records and knowledge management practices

Our ideal candidate To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

- Minimum 7 years PAE
- Strong experience providing advice on privacy, freedom of information, administrative law, or information governance matters
- Sound knowledge of the Privacy Act 1988, Australian Privacy Principles, Freedom of Information Act 1982, and related legislative frameworks
- Experience managing privacy compliance activities, privacy impact assessments, and privacy risk matters
- Experience handling FOI requests, reviews, and statutory decision-making processes
- The ability to provide practical, risk-based legal advice within tight timeframes
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to manage complex, sensitive, and high-profile matters
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills,



including the ability to explain complex legal concepts in a practical and accessible manner
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to build effective working relationships across diverse business areas
- The ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
- A proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement
