Lead complex industrial projects. Work with genuine autonomy. Help shape a growing specialist fire capability.
Two positions available | Full-time | Permanent or fixed-term opportunities | Remote / Work from Home | Australia | Competitive remuneration based on experience and capability + super | Site travel as required
The opportunity
MWS Risk is growing, and we're looking for experienced Senior Fire Engineers and/or Senior Fire Systems Engineers to join our specialist industrial risk consultancy. We are open to different areas of senior fire engineering expertise.
You may come from an industrial fire engineering and risk background, with experience in fire risk assessments, audits, fire safety strategies and developing solutions to complex industrial fire risks.
Or you may be an experienced Fire Systems Engineer, with strong capability in the design and delivery of industrial fire protection systems.
Some candidates will bring experience across both.
What matters is that you have the experience and confidence to lead projects, manage client relationships, make sound technical decisions and take ownership of delivering high-quality work.
This is more than a technical delivery role. You'll work directly with our directors, have genuine autonomy over your projects and contribute to the continued growth of MWS Risk's industrial fire capability.
Our focus is heavy industries — not residential or commercial building services.
Why MWS Risk?
MWS Risk is a specialist industrial risk consultancy providing expertise across industrial fire and risk engineering, process safety and functional safety. We work with clients across complex operating environments including mining, minerals processing, chemicals, oil and gas, energy, ports, marine, transport and other heavy industries.
We're deliberately a small, highly experienced team. That means less hierarchy, direct access to decision-makers and greater opportunity for experienced people to influence how work is delivered and how our capability develops.
You can expect
- Genuine autonomy – manage your work, make decisions and deliver to a high standard
- Complex industrial work – work where engineering decisions have genuine safety, operational and commercial consequences
- Broader technical exposure – work alongside our Process Safety specialists, with opportunities to develop capability across Process Safety and wider industrial risk disciplines
- Project ownership – lead projects from initial client engagement and scoping through to technical delivery
- Direct client relationships – work closely with clients and stakeholders as a trusted technical adviser
- Leadership and influence – provide technical direction, support other engineers and help shape our growing industrial fire capability
- Genuine flexibility – work remotely, with travel to client sites and project locations when required
What you'll do
At a senior level, you can expect to:
- Lead industrial fire engineering and/or fire systems projects from initial scope through to final delivery
- Manage project scope, programme, budget and technical quality
- Build and maintain trusted client relationships
- Provide senior technical advice and make sound engineering decisions
- Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs with designers, engineers, clients, authorities, insurers and other stakeholders
- Review technical work and provide guidance, oversight and mentoring to other engineers
- Potentially take on direct people leadership responsibilities as the fire engineering team grows
- Contribute to the continued development of MWS Risk's industrial fire capability
Where does your expertise sit?
We recognise that Fire Engineering and Fire Systems Engineering are different disciplines, and we're interested in candidates with strong senior-level capability in either area, or across both. Industrial Fire Engineering & Risk experience may include:
- Industrial fire risk assessments and workshops
- Site-based fire risk and fire system audits
- Quantitative risk assessments (QRA) and consequence analysis
- Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling
- Fire safety strategies and risk mitigation recommendations
- Technical advice on fire risk and compliance
- Fire risk reports, technical studies and audit reports
Fire Systems Engineering experience may include:
- Design and technical oversight of industrial fire protection systems
- Fire hydrant systems, including pumps, tanks and piping
- Fire suppression systems, including foam and water deluge, sprinklers, water mist and gaseous, wet or dry chemical systems
- Fire detection and alarm systems
- Passive fire protection
- Hydraulic calculations and fire systems analysis
- Technical specifications, calculations and design documentation
- Supporting projects through tendering, construction, installation and commissioning
- Fire system assessments and audits
You don't need to be a specialist across every area listed above. We're interested in understanding where your expertise is strongest and how it could complement and strengthen our existing capability.
About you
We're looking for demonstrated senior capability, not simply a job title or number of years on a CV.
You'll ideally bring
- A bachelor's or master's degree in fire safety engineering, chemical/process engineering, mechanical engineering or a related discipline
- Significant experience in industrial fire engineering, fire risk and/or fire protection systems
- Experience across mining, minerals processing, petrochemical, oil and gas, power, ports, marine or other heavy industrial environments
- Solid knowledge of relevant Australian Standards, NFPA codes and international fire safety standards and guidelines
- Experience leading projects and managing scope, programme and competing priorities
- Strong client-facing and stakeholder management capability
- The ability to review technical work and provide guidance to other engineers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- A practical, analytical and solutions-focused approach
- The initiative and self-discipline required to work effectively within a remote team
Professional credentials such as CPEng, RPEQ – Fire Safety / Fire Engineering, RPEV – Fire Safety, NSW Registered Certifier – Fire Safety, or other relevant fire engineering registrations or accreditations will be highly regarded but may not be essential for the right candidate.
The way we work
Our team works remotely, with travel to client sites and project locations when required. We don't measure contribution by time spent in an office — we trust our people to manage their work and deliver. That flexibility comes with autonomy and accountability.
This role will suit someone who is self-directed, organised and proactive — someone who sees what needs to be done and takes ownership of making it happen while remaining closely connected with colleagues and clients.
You'll need a suitable home office or workspace and be willing to undertake short business trips to client project offices and operating sites.
Ready for more autonomy and influence?
If you're an experienced Fire Engineer or Fire Systems Engineer who enjoys taking ownership, developing trusted client relationships and delivering work you're proud to put your name to, we'd like to hear from you. Apply with your CV or contact MWS Risk for a confidential discussion about the opportunity.
