12-month contract | Canberra, North Sydney or Newcastle | Hybrid An opportunity for an experienced rail safety assurance or systems safety leader to support a nationally significant transport infrastructure program. Operating at EL2 level, you will lead safety governance, systems assurance, regulatory compliance and operational readiness. This is not a generalist WHS role. It requires experience in rail, major infrastructure or another complex, safety-critical environment.

The Role

You will:

- Lead safety governance and assurance activities
- Own and improve the Safety Management System
- Oversee safety cases, hazard logs, risk registers and assurance evidence
- Embed Safety in Design and systems safety principles
- Support accreditation, certification and regulatory engagement
- Provide executive advice on safety-critical risks and decisions
- Oversee incident investigations and corrective actions
- Support systems integration and operational readiness

Our Ideal Candidate has:

- Led safety assurance or systems safety within rail or major transport infrastructure
- Owned or developed a complex Safety Management System
- Worked directly with regulators on accreditation, certification or assurance
- Developed or reviewed safety cases, hazard logs and assurance evidence
- Delivered Safety in Design across major projects
- Advised executives on significant safety risks
- Supported systems integration or operational readiness





Relevant backgrounds may include Safety Assurance Manager, Systems Safety Manager, Rail Safety Lead, Safety Certification Manager, Principal Systems Safety Engineer or Systems Assurance Lead. Candidates from aviation, Defence, energy, utilities or major engineering programs may also be considered where they offer solid systems safety, certification, technical assurance or regulatory experience.

Important

Generalist WHS, injury management, rehabilitation, wellbeing, workers' compensation or construction site safety experience will not be sufficient on its own. Candidates must demonstrate technical safety assurance or systems safety experience within a complex environment.

Contract Details

- Initial 12-month contract with potential extension
- 37.5 hours per week
- Hybrid working from Canberra, North Sydney or Newcastle
- Office attendance required 2 to 3 days per week
- Australian citizenship required
- Travel may be required
