Primary objective
Provide high-quality medical care to patients within the Department of Medicine at Alice Springs Hospital, under the guidance and supervision of specialist medical staff. Contribute to the supervision, teaching and development of junior medical officers.
Context Statement
Registrar positions are suitable for doctors from postgraduate year three (PGY3) and above, including Basic Physician Trainees(BPTs) and doctors from other relevant training pathways seeking experience in General and Acute Care Medicine. The Department provides broad clinical experience in General and Acute Care Medicine, with potential rotations through Cardiology, Oncology and Nephrology subject to availability. ICU placements may also be available for suitably experienced trainees.
BPTs are supported in undertaking the Royal
Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Basic Training program with a structured physician teaching program. Registrars are expected to actively participate in training, professional development and cultural orientation opportunities.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high-quality clinical assessment, treatment and ongoing management of admitted and non-admitted patients under the
guidance of specialist medical staff.
- Provide clinical leadership and supervision to junior medical officers, including oversight of patient care and clinical documentation.
- Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with medical, nursing, allied health and other teams to support safe, coordinated and patient-centred care, including appropriate clinical handover and escalation.
- Participate in the Department of Medicine 24-hour, 7-day roster, including after-hours, weekend and public holiday duties as rostered.
1. Participate in teaching, supervision and education of junior medical staff and medical students.
2. Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement, peer review and continuing professional development activities.
3. Participate in research and other academic activities where appropriate.
4. Undertake other duties as reasonably directed by the Head of Department or Executive Director of Medical Services.
5. Comply with relevant clinical standards,
policies and procedures including work health and safety requirements to support safe and
high-quality services.
1. Contribute to a positive, respectful and culturally safe workplace through professional conduct and effective teamwork.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. A minimum of three years postgraduate medical experience, including relevant clinical experience in Medicine and demonstrated
capacity to undertake the responsibilities of a Registrar.
- Demonstrated clinical skills and commitment to providing safe, high-quality patient care.
- Well-developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
1. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment and a commitment to providing culturally secure care to
Aboriginal patients and communities.
1. Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development, teaching and quality improvement activities.
Desirable
1. Currently undertaking, or intending to undertake, RACP Basic Physician Training or another relevant medical training pathway.
2. Experience in the supervision and teaching of junior medical staff and/or medical students.
3. Experience in General and Acute Care Medicine, Cardiology, Oncology or Nephrology.
