About our team

Assistant Border Force Officers (Casual/Irregular Intermittent) are employed with the Australian Border Force (ABF) at the APS2 classification and assist frontline operational teams to meet peaks associated with the movement of people and goods across the border.

The ABF is interested in receiving applications from individuals who have a broad and diverse range of backgrounds and skills. You should be an inclusive team member who is focused on contributing to a proactive and productive workplace culture.

Irregular/Intermittent Employees (IIEs) are predominantly required to work at international airports to alleviate pressure on existing teams during periods of increased flight departures and arrivals. They are also utilised to work in teams dealing with Maritime, Air Cargo, as well as general administration areas. The work undertaken is mainly outside of standard business hours as the ABF operates within a 24/7 operational environment.

You will be given the necessary training to perform work related functions. Whilst Assistant Border Force Officers are employed on a casual non-ongoing basis, training is approximately four weeks in duration and undertaken on a full time basis. Our ideal candidate The ABF is currently looking for flexible, adaptable, and reliable people to undertake work on a casual basis at the APS2 classification. Skills we need include:

Additional information

Shifts are offered on a casual and intermittent basis,



sometimes at short notice and include attendance within standard business hours, early morning, evening, weekend and public holidays. Successful applicants will have the ability to regularly and flexibly commute to ABF sites within their locale as needed.

These roles are frontline roles which require officers to wear the ABF uniform and represent the ABF professionally in the public domain. Officers must be capable of interacting with members of the community and foreign visitors.

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

​The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:

- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.

In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
