Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS) is Victoria's newest public mental health service dedicated to the care of young people aged 12 to 25 experiencing complex mental health challenges.

The Opportunity:

This is a rare, generational opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to help shape a statewide youth mental health service.

The Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU) forms an important part of the Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS), providing specialist inpatient care to young people experiencing complex mental health and psychosocial needs. The 22-bed unit comprises a 19-bed low dependency area and three beds for targeted specialised service delivery, with a strong focus on recovery, young person-centred care and least restrictive practice.

Within the IPU,



the Consultant Psychiatrist will provide expert medical leadership to a passionate multidisciplinary team, delivering comprehensive youth-focused care to young people aged 12-25 and their families. The role includes supervision of Psychiatry Registrars, clinical leadership and risk management, contribution to service development and innovation, and participation in PYMHWS medical education and training.

What You'll Do:

Provide medical leadership to a passionate, experienced multidisciplinary team of Mental Health nurses, Allied Health and Lived Experience workforce.

Deliver comprehensive, youth-focused care to young people aged 12-25 and their families.

Provide clinical leadership,



including mental health and risk assessment, formulation, treatment and crisis intervention.

Supervise Psychiatry Registrars and contribute to the professional development of the multidisciplinary team.

Participate in the PYMHWS on-call roster 5-6 weeks per calendar year.

Participate in the PYMHWS Medical Education and Training Program.

Contribute to service development, quality improvement, research and innovation in youth mental health care.

About You:

You are a skilled and thoughtful Consultant Psychiatrist with a strong interest in child and adolescent mental health, committed to improving outcomes for young people with complex needs.

- Fellowship of RANZCP (FRANZCP) and AHPRA specialist registration
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience in all aspects of psychiatry, and with substantial experience in clinical practice with young people (aged 12-25 years) experiencing mental disorders.
- Ability to demonstrate experience/ interest in working in a mental health setting.
- Strong expertise in complex assessment, formulation and risk management
- Experience working within multidisciplinary and cross-sector systems
- Excellent consultation, communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Demonstrated ability to provide clinical leadership and supervision
- Commitment to trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate care
- Interest in service development, teaching and system capacity building
- Knowledge of the Victorian Mental Health Wellbeing Act 2022.
- A Working with Children check
- PYHMWS will organise a Police Check prior to commencement of employment
- A current Victorian Driving license
