Management Accountant
Location: Newcastle, NSW | Hybrid (3 days in-office, 2 days WFH)
A little bit about us
Hello, we’re Mustard and we make colourful furniture designed to bring joy to everyday spaces. We’re a growing, design-led brand selling direct to customers around the world, alongside an expanding B2B channel.
We’re still growing, and with that growth comes more complexity. Our Finance team plays an important role in helping us understand how the business is performing, make confident decisions and build the systems and processes we need for what comes next.
We’re looking for a Management Accountant to join our Newcastle team and help us do exactly that.
The Role
This is a hands-on Management Accountant role sitting at the heart of Mustard’s Finance team.
You’ll oversee our monthly management accounting cycle, bringing together financial information across two legal entities, multiple regions and multiple currencies to give the business a clear and reliable view of performance.
You’ll work closely with our Head of Finance and Finance + Operations Analyst, taking responsibility for the quality of our month-end reporting while helping improve forecasting, financial analysis, controls and the way our Finance function works.
This role will suit someone who enjoys the technical side of accounting but also wants to understand the business behind the numbers. You’ll be joining at a point where there is plenty already in place, but lots of opportunity to make things simpler, clearer and better.
What’s in it for you?
? The chance to be part of a team in a company that’s scaling fast
? Work on exciting projects that directly impact customers around the world
? Collaborate with passionate teams who love what they do
? Be part of a growing business where your ideas can shape how we do things
What you’ll be doing
Management accounting + reporting
- Month-end close: Oversee the accurate and timely month-end close across our two entities, reviewing journals, accruals, reconciliations and supporting information to ensure the numbers are complete and reliable.
- Consolidated reporting: Bring together financial results across our Australian and UK entities, ensuring multiple currencies are accurately reflected and giving the business a clear consolidated view of performance.
- Management reporting: Prepare explicit and meaningful monthly management accounts and reporting that help the Leadership Team understand what is happening in the business and why.
- Variance analysis: Analyse performance against budget, forecast and prior periods, identifying meaningful movements and providing useful financial commentary.
Financial analysis + planning
- Financial analysis: Analyse performance across regions, channels, products and other relevant areas to identify trends,
risks and opportunities.
- Budgeting + forecasting: Support the budgeting and forecasting process, reviewing assumptions, preparing financial information and helping improve forecasting accuracy over time.
- Profitability: Improve visibility of profitability across the business, helping us better understand where we make money and what is driving changes in performance.
- Commercial support: Provide financial analysis for business cases, investments and other commercial decisions, helping teams make informed choices.
Finance systems + improvement
- Reporting systems: Maintain and improve the systems and reporting structures that support management accounting and consolidated reporting.
- Process improvement: Look for practical ways to simplify and automate finance processes, reducing manual work without losing accuracy or appropriate oversight.
- Finance integration: Work closely with our Finance + Operations Analyst to make sure operational finance, systems and month-end reporting work effectively together.
- Ways of working: Help build clear, scalable finance processes that can keep pace as Mustard continues to grow.
Financial controls + compliance
- Financial controls: Maintain and improve key accounting controls, resolving issues and helping protect the accuracy and reliability of our financial information.
- Year-end + audit: Support statutory reporting, year-end requirements and audit preparation across our entities.
- Tax + compliance: Support tax and financial compliance requirements across multiple jurisdictions, working with our Head of Finance and external advisors where specialist input is needed.
Collaboration
- Business partnership: Build trusted relationships across Mustard, helping teams understand financial information and use it more effectively.
- Finance team: Review and support work completed by our Finance + Operations Analyst, sharing knowledge and helping build capability within the team.
- External partners: Work effectively with accountants, tax advisors and other external finance partners across our regions.
Hello, is it you we’re looking for?
You’re a capable accountant who enjoys understanding how a business really works, not simply producing the numbers.
You’ll bring:
- CA, CPA, ACCA or CIMA qualification, or be well progressed towards qualification.
- Experience in a Management Accountant or Assistant Management Accountant role.
- Solid month-end and management reporting experience.
- Experience working across multiple entities, with consolidation experience highly regarded.
- Confidence working with multiple currencies and understanding the impact of foreign exchange on financial reporting.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly.
- Good systems capability and confidence learning how information moves between finance and operational systems.
- A practical, curious approach to solving problems and improving how things work.
- Clear communication and a collaborative way of working.
Experience in retail, wholesale, manufacturing or ecommerce would be useful, but it isn’t essential. We’re growing quickly, so things will continue to change. You don’t need to have every answer on day one, but you should enjoy learning, improving and helping build something that works better tomorrow than it does today.
How we work
We’re collaborative, practical and kind.
We believe in getting better every day, in small, meaningful ways. We care about doing good work, supporting each other and building something we’re proud of. Ideas are welcomed, ownership is shared and progress is steady.
This is an opportunity to shape an important part of Finance within a growing brand that values creativity, clarity and care.
We value clear communication, practical solutions, curiosity and people who are happy to get into the detail when it matters.
