About St James’ King Street
St James’ is the oldest Anglican parish church in the City of Sydney. It occupies a historic building in the heart of Sydney, close to the Law Courts, Parliament, and other institutions. It is renowned for its beautiful church music and liturgical worship.
The parish highly values the Christian welcome of all visitors to St James’.
About the Position The Vergers support the varied activities that take place in St James’ Church, the Crypt, and St James’ Hall. These include liturgical services, musical concerts, lectures, and social events. Responsibilities include opening and setting up the church and crypt spaces, greeting and assisting parishioners and visitors, and serving and clearing food and drinks. The nature of these responsibilities mean that a moderate level of physical fitness will be required.
This is a casual role with primary responsibility for supporting evening and weekend events and an expected time commitment of 10–15 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities
· Open and prepare the church at the start of the day
· Ensure accessibility of church and crypt throughout the day
· Greet and assist visitors, parishioners, and volunteers when approached
· Assist with events, including set-up, pack-up, serving food and drinks, and tidying
· Receive deliveries and liaise with and provide access for contractors
· Assume a simple ceremonial role in church services where required
· Close and secure church building at the end of the day
Key Relationships
· Takes direction from senior staff
· Reports to the Operations Coordinator
· Coordinates closely with the Verger
· Liaises from time to time with other staff and parishioners
Employment Conditions
This is a casual role with an expected time commitment of 10–15 hours per week.
Its primary purpose of is to support parish events including concerts, lectures, readings,
and seminars, which typically (but not exclusively) take place on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
The Assistant Verger also stands in for the Verger during church opening hours where needed, by negotiation. Regular hours are 10am–4pm Monday to Friday; 8am–1pm Saturday; and 7am–4pm Sunday. Availability on Wednesday afternoon and evening will be particularly helpful.
Given the variation in the life of the parish from week to week, a degree of flexibility will be highly advantageous. All working hours will be remunerated.
Selection Criteria
Essential
· Moderate understanding of the Christian faith and Anglican liturgical worship, or willingness to learn
· Positive communication skills and fluency in English
· Confidence with basic technology and computer software
· Moderate level of physical fitness
· Responsible Service of Alcohol certification, or willingness to obtain
· Current Working With Children Check (prior to appointment)
Desirable
· Familiarity with the St James’ King Street site and its history
· Work experience in a hospitality setting
