Osborne Richardson is assisting a local council in its search for an experienced Animal Control Officer to join its Community Services team on a 6-month contract, residential basis in Aurukun. This role plays a key part in the development and implementation of Council's Animal Management Plan and Policies, taking responsibility for domestic animal management, holding facility maintenance and animal care, registrations and record keeping, animal welfare activities and feral animal monitoring.

You'll work closely with Council's Environmental Health Manager and Indigenous Environmental Health team, combining hands-on animal control work with community engagement and education, all within a close-knit remote community setting.

Key Responsibilities

- Undertake community patrols to identify stray, nuisance or sick animals, and capture and impound wandering animals where necessary
- Respond to and investigate complaints, dog attacks and welfare concerns, gathering evidence and determining appropriate compliance action under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008
- Maintain the holding facility/pound, including animal care, basic first aid, feeding and exercising animals, and coordinating veterinary assistance when required
- Operate and maintain Council's dog registration system, ensuring accurate records of registrations, renewals and ownership changes
- Assess and enforce minimum standards for enclosures, hygiene,



shelter and animal welfare in line with Council's Local Law
- Contribute to operational planning, budget input and reporting to the Environmental Health Manager
- Deliver community education and awareness programs on animal health, population control and owner responsibilities, in conjunction with the Indigenous Environmental Health team

About You

- Demonstrated experience in a similar animal control or animal management role
- Demonstrated knowledge of animal behaviour, control and identification
- Understanding of legislation relevant to animal management, or the ability to acquire knowledge of Council's Local Law and subordinate Local Law, Keeping and Control of Animals
- High level interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to negotiate and manage conflict
- A high level of commitment to interacting positively within a remote community
- Demonstrated computer literacy using Microsoft Office
- Ability to work both unsupervised and as part of a team to achieve positive outcomes
- Current Class C (manual) driver's licence
- Current Gun Licence
