Company Description Signal Flare Inc. is a charity dedicated to supporting people experiencing homelessness and other marginalized community members by providing free clothing, shoes, toiletries, children’s toys, non-perishable foods, and more at community BBQs. Founded in 2013 by Grant Richards (“Grant the Polite Guy”) and Director Berni Palings (“Bernie the Polite Girl”), Signal Flare grew from grassroots BBQs that brought hundreds of people together to access essentials in a welcoming environment. The organization focuses on equality, social inclusion, and creating a social, dignified setting where guests can receive support without judgment.

Flare’s mission is to offer second chances, restore self-belief and self-worth, and empower people who want to get back on their feet. Community members can support Signal Flare through donations or by volunteering via the website, LinkedIn, or Facebook.

Role Description Committee Members at Signal Flare Inc. play a key role in guiding the charity’s activities, strategy, and community initiatives. In this volunteer role, Committee Members participate in regular online meetings, contribute to planning events such as BBQs for people in need, and help shape policies and programs that promote dignity, inclusion, and practical support. Day-to-day tasks may include reviewing proposals,



providing input on fundraising and outreach, assisting with volunteer coordination, and ensuring that programs remain aligned with Signal Flare’s mission and values.

Committee

Members may also support communication efforts, build partnerships with community organizations, and offer professional or lived-experience insights to improve services. This role is suitable for individuals who want to make a meaningful impact while collaborating with a compassionate, mission-driven team.

Qualifications

- Interest in nonprofit governance, community services, or social impact initiatives.
- Ability to participate in online fortnightly meetings, collaborate effectively online, and contribute to planning and decision-making processes.
- Solid communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage respectfully and empathetically with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Organisational and time-management skills to review materials, follow through on commitments, and support ongoing projects.
- Understanding of or lived experience with issues related to homelessness, marginalization, social inclusion, or community outreach is highly valued.
- Prior experience on committees, boards, or advisory groups is beneficial but not required; all motivated volunteers are encouraged to apply.
