Role Description The Family Solicitor role is a part time position based in Melbourne, VIC, with a hybrid work arrangement allowing a combination of in-office and work-from-home days. The solicitor will manage a range of family law matters, including parenting arrangements, property settlements, financial agreements, and related estate and succession issues. Day-to-day responsibilities include advising clients, drafting and reviewing legal documents, preparing court applications and correspondence, negotiating settlements, and appearing at mediations and court hearings as required.
The role involves close collaboration with colleagues on cross-border family matters,
international property interests, and coordination with overseas counsel where needed. The solicitor will also be expected to maintain accurate file management, comply with professional and ethical obligations, and contribute to the firm’s client service standards through timely communication and proactive case management.
Qualifications
- Admitted to practice as a solicitor in Australia, holding a current Australian practising certificate, with experience in family law matters such as parenting, property, and financial settlement issues.
- Strong skills in legal research, drafting, and reviewing documents including affidavits, consent orders, financial agreements, and related commercial or estate instruments.
- Proven ability in negotiation, dispute resolution, and advocacy, including experience with mediations, directions hearings, and liaising with counsel and other parties.
- Excellent client communication and relationship management skills, with a focus on clear advice, confidentiality, and trauma-informed, culturally aware practice.
- Solid organisational and time-management abilities, including managing multiple files, meeting court and statutory deadlines, and working effectively in a hybrid environment.
- Familiarity with cross-border or international legal issues, particularly in relation to overseas property interests, international estates, or multi-jurisdictional family arrangements, is highly desirable.
- Comfort using legal practice management software and standard office applications; willingness to adapt to new digital tools and remote-working technologies.
