About The Role

Child Wellbeing Coordinators (CWCs) are specialist child protection and wellbeing practitioners located within local health districts. They provide expert consultation, advice and support to health workers in responding to concerns about the safety, welfare and wellbeing of children, young people and unborn babies.

CWCs support Mandatory Reporters to assess risk, make informed decisions regarding suspected Risk of Significant Harm (ROSH), and facilitate appropriate reporting and referral pathways. They work collaboratively with Child Wellbeing Units, statutory and non-government agencies, and health services to strengthen early intervention responses and promote child-centred, trauma-informed and culturally safe practice.

CWCs also work closely with Child Wellbeing Units (CWUs) and receive referrals and requests for consultation regarding complex child protection and wellbeing matters. The role contributes to the development and review of policies, procedures and practice resources, supports workforce capability through education, in-services and other learning initiatives, and works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen responses to vulnerable children, young people and families.

The role also leads workforce capability development through the delivery of Child Protection Education (alongside the VANS Educator role) and contributes to service improvement, policy implementation and system-wide responses to vulnerable children and families.

Key Accountabilities

- Receive and assess concerns from health mandatory reporters regarding the safety, welfare and wellbeing of children, young people and unborn babies, applying expert knowledge and experience to support an appropriate health response, including supporting mandatory reporters' responsibilities in line with legislation requirements.

- Exercise independent skilled judgement when required, in solving problems and managing cases, providing timely and accurate escalation to Child Protection Helpline and/or Child Wellbeing Unit (CWU) management on emergent issues including systemic, complex or critical issues, and conduct reportable to the Ombudsman in relation to work with children.




- Maintain accurate records including case notes and databases noting health workers' concerns, appraisal and decision making, shared information, as well as agreed plans and actions.
- Implementation and facilitation of Child Protection Education / Child Protection Training strategy across the MLHD.
- Act as a resource and mentor to others in relation to child protection, wellbeing and the health care needs of children and young people, including the provision of culturally appropriate advice to the development and implementation of culturally safe and respectful education, policy and procedures to promote consistent best practice.
- Identify and develop relations with key external stakeholders and community partners to facilitate collaborative partnerships.
- Develop and maintain a high level of understanding of health and community services in the MLHD, including entry points and referral processes, to assist mandatory reporters and CWUs in fulfilling their responsibilities.
- Participate in case reviews or clinical audits to address ongoing practice and systems improvement in the provision of health services to vulnerable or at risk children and young people.
- Work within a quality framework and initiate/contribute to continuous quality improvement activities as appropriate.
- Undertake reasonable travel in accordance with the duties of this position.
- Participate in VANS (Violence, Abuse & Neglect) Coverage.
- Other duties as directed and consistent with the grade of this position, as may be requested by the Clinical Leader/Senior Manager from time to time.

- Class C Drivers Licence

Selection Criteria

- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Welfare, Counselling or another health / human services discipline; with extensive experience in child protection, child wellbeing and/or working with persons who have experienced trauma.
- Demonstrated understanding of the legislative context for child protection intervention.




- Demonstrated ability to provide professional leadership, consultation and mentorship to clinicians and health workers in relation to child protection, child wellbeing and risk assessment.
- Demonstrated understanding and application of trauma-informed, child-centred and culturally safe practice when working with vulnerable children, young people and families.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and implement workload priorities in an environment of competing demands, with ability to work autonomously and provide high level skill in risk assessment and decision making.
- An understanding of MLHD's range of health services with advanced skills in building and sustaining collaborative relationships, coordinating and liaising with key stakeholders within and external to MLHD to support coordinated responses for vulnerable children, young people and families.
- Demonstrated high level interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including the ability to elicit pertinent information, provide timely and relevant advice, respond and problem-solve with consumers and health care providers who may be reluctant or challenging to engage, and ability to facilitate education and/or training groups.

- Demonstrated skills and experience in working with computer software applications, databases and programs.
- Current driver's licence and willingness and ability to travel, which may involve long distances within the health district.
