Büro North

Melbourne

Büro North is a design and strategy studio for people and place — from details to districts. For two decades we have worked in user experience, customer-centred design and wayfinding, across transport, health, education, culture, sport and tourism, from studios in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and London.

We are growing our team and looking for interior designers to join the Melbourne/Brisbane or Sydney studio. All three sit in the same team and work across the same kinds of project — large, complex, multi-user places such as integrated care precincts, transport interchanges, civic and cultural buildings — but each role carries a different centre of gravity: strategy, site planning, or coordination.

If you are an interior designer more interested in how a place works than how it photographs, we would like to hear from you.

ROLE 01

Designer

You shape the thinking before the drawing starts. Working alongside clients, architects and our wayfinding and experience teams to understand how a place will be used, by whom, and what the design actually has to resolve — then setting the strategy everything downstream is measured against.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

– Lead discovery: stakeholder engagement, site analysis, user group and user journey mapping.

– Translate operational, environmental and brand requirements into clear design principles.

– Write and structure strategy documents, design narratives and performance specifications.

– Present and hold a position with clients, architects and consultant teams.

– Test concepts against accessibility and Universal Design requirements from the outset.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

– 3–6 years in interior design,

architecture or a related spatial discipline.

– Robust written communication — you can build an argument on a page, not only in a plan.

– Comfort with ambiguity in the early stages of a project.

– Experience on public, health, education or transport projects is an advantage.

ROLE 02

Strategist

You resolve the plan. Taking strategy into spatial arrangement — zoning, adjacencies, circulation, thresholds, and the movement of people, vehicles and services through a site.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

– Develop site and floor plans from concept through to documentation.

– Resolve zoning, adjacency and circulation across complex mixed-use programs.

– Work through thresholds between public, semi-public, back-of-house and secure areas.

– Coordinate spatial requirements with architects, services consultants and operators.

– Document to a standard that survives construction.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

– 3–6 years’ interior design experience with real documentation depth.

– Fluency in Revit and the Adobe suite; AutoCAD and Rhino useful.

– Working knowledge of the NCC, DDA and AS 1428 as they apply to interiors.

– The ability to hold a whole site in your head while drawing a single room.

ROLE 03

Project Coordinator

You keep it moving.

Running the day-to-day of projects — programme, stakeholders, client communication, and the hundred small decisions that determine whether a project lands well.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

– Coordinate project programmes, deliverables and internal resourcing.

– Act as the point of contact for clients, consultants, contractors and suppliers.

– Attend meetings, minutes, RFIs and design issue registers.

– Track scope, fee and variations with the Project Director

– Support site inspections, shop drawing review and defects through delivery.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

– 3–6 years in interior design, including time spent in delivery.

– Organisational rigour — you close things out rather than leave them open.

– Confidence with clients and consultants on the phone, not only by email.

– Familiarity with construction contracts and consultant coordination.

What we offer

– Projects that shape how people move through public places, at a scale you can point to.

– A studio that treats strategy, wayfinding and interiors as one discipline rather than three.

– Hybrid working, and colleagues across four cities.

– Professional development, and support toward registration or accreditation where relevant.

– A team that reviews work honestly and credits it properly.

How to apply

Send your CV and a portfolio (PDF, 10MB maximum) to [email protected] In a short covering note, tell us which of the three roles you are applying for and why that one. If two of them fit you, say so — we would rather know.

Please include the role title in your subject line.
