A major Commonwealth Government agency is seeking an experienced Calibration Officer to join a specialist Standards & Metrology Laboratory in Docklands.

This is a three-year contract supporting a major national upgrade of Australia’s Automatic Weather Station network across more than 750 sites in Australia and the Pacific.

The role is hands-on and technically focused. You’ll work across the calibration, testing, verification and maintenance of scientific instrumentation, helping ensure equipment deployed across the network is accurate, traceable and fit for purpose.

If your background is in calibration, metrology, instrumentation, electronics or another technically rigorous measurement environment, this is an opportunity to apply that experience to a nationally significant infrastructure program.

Previous weather or meteorological experience is not essential.

The role

Reporting to the Manager, Standards & Metrology Laboratory, you will:

- Coordinate and undertake calibration, testing and maintenance of laboratory and field equipment
- Perform verification and acceptance testing of new and existing instrumentation
- Work across electronic, electrical, mechanical, meteorological and hydrological equipment
- Analyse calibration and operational data and investigate equipment performance issues
- Troubleshoot instruments that fail testing or fall outside required tolerances
- Support the assessment and evaluation of new instrumentation
- Prepare technical reports, procedures and work instructions
- Maintain accurate calibration, testing and quality records
- Coordinate calibration activities around project rollout schedules
- Contribute to quality systems and continual improvement aligned with ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025




- Provide technical advice to project and operational stakeholders
- Support computer programs and tools used for scientific and operational activities

What we’re looking for

The most key requirement is genuine practical calibration experience.

You should be able to demonstrate hands-on experience with:

- Calibration, measurement traceability and uncertainty
- Reference standards, tolerances and verification processes
- Scientific, electrical, electronic, mechanical or environmental instrumentation
- Technical fault finding and equipment troubleshooting
- Recording and analysing calibration or measurement data
- Writing technical procedures, work instructions or reports
- Microsoft Excel and Microsoft 365

Experience within a NATA-accredited or ISO/IEC 17025 environment will be highly regarded.

We are also interested in candidates with experience across areas such as temperature, pressure, humidity, electrical measurement, sensors, environmental monitoring, process instrumentation or scientific equipment.

Experience with meteorological or hydrological instrumentation would be advantageous, but it is not essential if you bring strong transferable calibration and metrology capability.

Exposure to LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB, VBA, automated testing or instrument-control systems would also be beneficial.

What matters is that you have personally performed calibration work and understand concepts such as traceability, measurement uncertainty, reference standards and equipment tolerances.
