Date advertised: 9th September 2026
Job Type: Part time

St John's Bishopthorpe is seeking to appoint an Assistant Minister to pastor, lead and teach God’s people, equipping them to glorify God in all of life, for all of life. This is a part-time appointment (3 days/week).
About St John's
St John's Glebe is the village church to the densely populated inner-urban suburbs of Glebe and Forest Lodge, with a pronounced 20- to 39-year-old demographic bulge, and 2.5x the national average in tertiary studies. Recent developments in Forest Lodge and Harold Park, and projected development of the Wentworth Park and the White Bay (Bays West) precincts, provide huge opportunities for mission.
St John's has two congregations - the weekly Sunday 9:30am gathering, and the monthly Scarred Tree Indigenous Ministries, a 'church within a church.' In addition, St John's runs the Glebe Assistance Partnership Programme (GAPP), a well-established ministry of care and financial counselling to locals who are vulnerable or disadvantaged.
St John's currently has an Acting Rector, the Rev. Michael Paget, who is also Rector of St Barnabas Broadway. This arrangement is in place while the St John's develops parish-owned accommodation for a current rectory.
About the role
The Assistant Minister will oversee pastoral care to the Sunday 9:30am congregation and running of the Sunday 9:30am service, raising up and supporting godly and Christlike leaders from within the congregation, take the lead in mission to the local area and exercise direct oversight of the small staff team (a parish administrator and two GAPP counsellors).
They will be supported in this role by the Acting Rector, and also from time-to-time by the wider St Barnabas Broadway staff team.
Remuneration is in accordance with Diocesan guidelines, based on experience and qualifications.
About you
The successful applicant will be a committed evangelical Christian, reformed in accordance with the Thirty Nine Articles, a humble leader, pastorally warm, hardworking, faithful to the gospel and most likely already fruitful in a similar role. They will be highly relational, which is essential for a village church setting.
They will be ordained or seeking ordination.
At St John's Glebe, both suitably qualified men and women preach in the public gathering under the authority of the elders of the church, and they will need to support this practice.
You will possess:
- Theological accreditation at a minimum of BTh level, and high level biblical & theological skills
- A demonstrated ability to teach & engage winsomely both in person and from the pulpit
- The capacity to work in a focussed and consistent way without direct supervision
- Concern for the gospel witness of Indigenous ministry and ministry to the poor, as well as for mission and evangelism
- Competencies in leading a small mixed team of staff and volunteers
You must also be eligible to be licensed or authorised for parish ministry by the Archbishop of Sydney.
Other ministry tasks will be determined according to gifts, interests and experience.
Applications with CV and the contact details of three referees should be sent to ******@glebechurch.org.au or to the Acting Rector, St John's Glebe, 138A Glebe Point Road Glebe NSW 2037.
